Home Market Numbers: Maggie Can't Wake Up the Box Office

July 26th, 2015

Maggie

There was not a single first run release among the new releases for July 7th, which meant Get Hard remained on top of the combined DVD and Blu-ray chart for July 12th. It sold an additional 268,000 units and generated $5.21 million for the week, giving it totals of 760,000 units / $13.75 million after two. More...

Dude Bro Party Massacre 3

It's a slow week, which should come as no surprise. There are no major releases and even among the smaller releases, there are few that are must haves. As far as Pick of the Week contenders go, Dude Bro Party Massacre 3 is the best. It is the Pick of the Week, but you can only get it on the Official Site. I think it is worth the price for the Superfan Edition, but I also backed the Kickstarter at the Blu-ray level, so my judgment is not to be trusted. More...

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: Maggie

July 6th, 2015

Maggie

Maggie is a film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, who hasn't had a massive hit since his return to acting post-politics. In fact, most of the films he's starred in have struggled mightily. Maggie was given an early VOD release, which might be a sign that the studio gave up on the movie. Or it might be a sign that VOD is becoming more lucrative, so much so that VOD can cover this film's modest production budget. More...

Contest: Terminate Maggie

June 26th, 2015

The first weekend of July has two potential $100 million hits: Magic Mike XXL and Terminator Genisys. Both movies have nearly identical box office potentials, but Terminator Genisys should start faster due to its genre and target audience. As such, it is the choice target film for this week's Box Office Prediction contest. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office number for Terminator Genisys.

Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of Maggie on DVD. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will also win a copy of Maggie on DVD. Finally, we will be choosing an entrant from the group of people who haven't won, or haven't won recently, and they will also win a Frankenprize featuring a previously reviewed DVD or Blu-ray. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

Per Theater Chart: Ultron is Still Big

May 12th, 2015

I Am Big Bird

The Avengers: Age of Ultron remained in first place on the per theater chart with an average of $18,182. It wasn't the only film in the $10,000 chart this week. Pather Panchali was close behind with $16,333 in its lone theater. I Am Big Bird: The Caroll Spinney Story earned $10,150 over the weekend for a total of $13,053 from Wednesday through Sunday. Weekend Estimates: Hot Pursuit No Match for Ultron

May 10th, 2015

The Avengers: Age of Ultron

Hot Pursuit is utterly failing to live up to its name this weekend, with an anaemic $13.3 million opening—the worst for Reese Witherspoon since Cruel Intentions in 1999, and her worst ever for a wide-release movie, when adjusted for inflation. The Avengers: Age of Ultron wasn't really expected to be threatened in first place, and is actually doing quite well for a movie that opened with close to $200 million. It will be down about 60% this weekend to $77.2 million, per Disney, the second-best second weekend ever, just ahead of Avatar, and some way behind The Avengers. More...

Limited Releases: Not a Big Week for Limited Releases

May 8th, 2015

The Avengers: Age of Ultron

This week's list of limited releases isn't exactly short, but it is short on potential hits. Maggie and 5 Flights Up both have strong casts, but are playing in potentially too many theaters and also on Video on Demand. Noble is earning some of the best reviews, but its high theater count and lack of star power could hurt it. I Am Big Bird: The Caroll Spinney Story is also earning great reviews, but it is one of the rare documentaries that is taking the Video on Demand route. More...
