Home Market Numbers: Maggie Can't Wake Up the Box Office

July 26, 2015

Maggie

There was not a single first run release among the new releases for July 7th, which meant Get Hard remained on top of the combined DVD and Blu-ray chart for July 12th. It sold an additional 268,000 units and generated $5.21 million for the week, giving it totals of 760,000 units / $13.75 million after two.

Maggie was the biggest surprise on the chart, as it earned second place with 133,000 units sold and $1.66 million in revenue generated. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 36%, which is fine for this type of film. I'm surprised it did this well on the home market, because it was a VOD premiere with only a token theatrical release. Woman in Gold earned third place with 102,000 units / $1.52 million during its first week of release. Its opening week Blu-ray share was just a hair under 20%, but it is common for dramas aimed at a more mature target demographic to struggle on Blu-ray. Despicable Me 2 remained in fourth place with 96,000 units / $1.10 million for the week. The film has sold 13.36 million units and generated $231.37 million in total revenue. That's more than the top three best-selling releases of 2015 have managed. Granted, it has had more than a year to accumulate those sales. The Kingsman: Secret Service fell to fifth place with 95,000 units / $1.60 million for the week giving its totals of 1.31 million units / $21.25 million after five weeks of release.

Monster High: Scaris, City of Frights just missed the top five with 83,000 units / $1.03 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was only 13%, but this is not unexpected for a kids release. House of Cards: Season Three opened in tenth place with 73,000 units; however, its revenue was $2.05 million, which was enough for second place. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 17%, which is low for the format as a whole, but not bad for a TV on DVD drama. The final new release to chart was Poldark, a British TV mini-series. It debuted in 28th place with 25,000 units / $735,000. TV mini-series rarely chart, so it is hard to judge its opening week Blu-ray share based on past performances by similar releases. That said, its share was 26%, which is better than the format as a whole.

The overall Blu-ray market was down compared to last week and last year. Week-over-week, Blu-ray sales were down 15% in terms of units and 14% in terms of revenue. Year-over-year, Blu-ray sales were down 2.2% in terms of units and 12% in terms of revenue. The overall Blu-ray share fell to just 25%, compared to 28% last week and 29% last year. Summer can't end soon enough for the home market.

The overall DVD market was mixed, down compared to last week, but higher than last year. Compared to last week, there were 5.0% fewer units sold, resulting in a 4.2% drop in sales. On the other hand, compared to last year, there were 15% more units sold helping the revenue climb by 9.3%.

Next week's new releases will be led by Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, at least in terms of sales. This week last year, the best-selling new release was Rio 2, which led the way on both Blu-ray and DVD. I don't see 2015 keeping pace with last year.
