Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Full financial estimates for this film, including domestic and international box office, video sales, video rentals, TV and ancillary revenue are available through our research services. For more information, please contact us at research@the-numbers.com.

DVD Sales: New Releases Fought the Law (and the Law Won)

March 19th, 2010

While there were plenty of new releases reaching the top 30 on the sales chart this week, a holdover, Law Abiding Citizen, remained in top spot. During its second week of release it sold an additional 353,000 units, lifting its total to 1.18 million units sold and $11.97 million in total sales. More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for February 23rd, 2010

February 23rd, 2010

We're still in that no-man's land for the home market: it's way too late to take advantage of the Christmas shopping season and it's still too early for most Awards Season releases to be on shelves. There are a few wide releases coming out this week, but only one of them, The Informant!, is worth buying on either DVD or Blu-ray. The best release of the week, and the winner of our Pick of the Week honor, is The Damned United, which is worth picking up on DVD or Blu-ray. Meanwhile, Trailer Park Boys: Countdown to Liquor Day - Blu-ray earns the coveted and rarely-awarded Puck of the Week. More...

Awards Season - Golden Globe Nominations are Up in the Air

December 16th, 2009

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced their nominations this week, but looking over the list of films chosen, it is hard to declare any one film as the big winner. Up in the Air did pick up six Golden Globe nominations, including several of the most prestigious nominations, but it is far from the only major player. More...

September Ends on a Cloudy Note

September 28th, 2009

None of the three wide releases were able to live up to Thursday's predictions and while the number one film held on a lot better than expected, it wasn't enough to compensate. Overall the box office was down 4.7% from last weekend to $96%, which was 4.2% lower than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date 2009 is still up on 2008 by 7.8% at $7.8 billion to $7.3 billion. Will September End Famously?

September 24th, 2009

The three wide releases this week include two that have a shot at top spot, depending on who you ask, and another that will likely struggle for a spot in the top five. Overall the new releases are about as strong as this time last year, but holdovers should be the deciding factor in keeping 2009 ahead of last year's pace. More...

That's A Spicy Box Office

September 21st, 2009

As expected, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs finished in first place over the weekend, and it beat industry expectations by earning more than $30 million. This helped the overall box office grow by 9.9% from last weekend. The total weekend haul of $101 million was also 14.9% higher than the same weekend last year. Year to date, 2009 has made $7.70 billion at the box office, which is 7.9% higher than last year's pace. This isn't as large a lead as the box office has had this year, but it's still fantastic. Weekend Estimates: Cloudy Tops with $30.1 Million

September 20th, 2009

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was the clear winner at the box office, according to studio estimates released on Sunday morning. The digitally-animated comedy earned a very respectable $30.1 million, according to Sony, making it their best opening ever for an animated film ahead of Open Season, which posted a $23.6 million opening back in 2006. Meatballs looks a fair bet to hit $100 million during its run. More...

Meatballs Has More than a Chance

September 18th, 2009

We have four wide releases this week, or at least three wide releases and one semi-wide. There should be very little suspense on which film will finish first though, as Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is the clear favorite. The real question is how much it will make and whether or not it can help the overall box office top last year. Or, if some of the pundits are correct, by how much. More...

2009 Preview: September

September 1st, 2009

Summer ended on a strong note with three films from August that have the potential to cross $100 million at the box office. But I don't think there's a single film coming out this month that has the potential to do the same. Then again, we're not concerned with keeping up with August, we are concerned with keeping up with September last year, and that will be an easier task most weeks. More...

More...
