Theater counts: Godzilla vs. Kong towers above all challengers

April 8th, 2021

Godzilla vs. Kong

Godzilla vs. Kong enters its second full weekend after scoring a remarkable $48m in its first five days of release. That number far exceeded expectations, which were originally in the $20m-$30m range. We expect the monster film to hover close to its 3,064 count from last week, and possibly add a few extra theaters. The only new wide release this week is the debut of Lionsgate’s sci-fi thriller Voyagers, starring Tye Sheridan and Lily-Rose Depp, opening in 1,972 locations. Nobody goes from 2,567 theaters last week to 2,392 this week, while Raya and the Last Dragon dips below the 2,000 theater mark, coming in on 1,941 locations. New this week is Moffie, the early 1980s set drama starring Kai Luke Brummer. The film, being released by IFC Films, opens in 51 theaters. More...

Limited and VOD Releases: Will Emma Make Audiences Fall in Love?

February 21st, 2020

Emma

There are plenty of well-reviewed limited releases on this week’s list, including Emma, which is also earning the loudest buzz. I’m personally most interested in seeing Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memories Doll, but True Fiction, Vitalina Varela, and some others are also intriguing. More...

Limited and VOD Releases: Animal Magnetism

June 1st, 2018

American Animals

It is a slow week, so slow that I’m bending the rules when it comes to what films appear on this list. If I used the ten review limit, there would only be a handful of films. Of these films, only American Animals and Breath are earning reviews that are good enough for limited release. That said, there are also a few that should be worth a VOD rental, like Discreet and Social Animals. More...

2018 Preview: March

March 1st, 2018

Ready Player One

February was an amazing month, thanks mainly to Black Panther, but Fifty Shades Freed and Peter Rabbit were also significant hits and overall the month was a massive improvement over last February. Looking forward, there’s nothing opening in March that will earn as much in total as Black Panther did during its opening weekend. That said, A Wrinkle in Time and Ready Player One should have no trouble getting to $100 million, while Tomb Raider has a 50/50 chance of getting there. Unfortunately, compared to last March, this is still a pittance. There’s a chance that no film opening this March will earn as much in total as Beauty and the Beast opened with last march. We will need Black Panther to have good legs to keep 2018 ahead of 2017 by the end of the month. More...

2015 Preview: October

October 1st, 2015

The Martian

September ended on a record note with the debut of Hotel Transylvania 2. Additionally, there was great depth and 2015's lead over 2014 grew to nearly $500 million. How do things look going forward? The month starts out with The Martian, which should have no trouble becoming the biggest hit of the month and might even top $200 million. On the other hand, no other film is expected to get to $100 million. There's only one or two that will even come close. Fortunately, last October was very similar with one $100 million hit, Gone Girl, while two other films came close, Annabelle and Fury. It looks like it will be up to the depth films from both years to determine which year comes out on top. More...

Limited Releases: Looking for the Perfect Limited Release

April 11th, 2014

Perfect Sisters poster

This weekend is almost as busy for limited releases as last week, and on the plus side, there are a handful of films that are worth checking out. Only Lovers Left Alive and Joe are both earning great reviews. On the other hand, Only Lovers Left Alive is probably too "Art House" to thrive, while Joe is opening too wide and on Video on Demand, so its box office chances are also limited. Dancing in Jaffa is earning perfect reviews, but documentaries rarely have breakout success. Finally, Disco Singh could be a surprise hit, as it could be on track to break records in its native India. More...
