April was all about Avengers: Infinity War, which earned about as much during its opening weekend as the next two biggest films, A Quiet Place and Rampage, will earn in total. However, moving Infinity War to April has left a big gap for the first two weeks of May. It isn’t until Deadpool 2 debuts that we have a potential $100 million movie, while the week after Solo: A Star Wars Story closes the month on a strong note. Fortunately, both of those films are expected to earn more than $100 million during their opening weekends alone and combined could earn over $700 million domestically. Last May, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 helped the month get off to a fast start, but it was the only monster hit of the month. Infinity War opening a week early will mean the month will start slower, in terms of new releases, but Infinity War’s record-breaking debut should help 2018 come out ahead in the end.

Many of the films on this week’s list are good, but not great. Some are like After Louie, good enough to rent on VOD, but not worth a trip to the theaters. Fortunately, there are some that are worth a trip to the theaters, including Love After Love and Outside In.

January 1st, 2015
2014 is over and for the most part, December was a soft ending to a weak year. This is bad news for two reasons. Firstly, it means the overall box office is still soft and it is unlikely that January will start strong. Secondly, last January was a great month, thanks in part to Frozen and other holdovers. The slump can't last forever and Taken 3 should help 2015 get off to a reasonably fast start and it even has a shot at $100 million. American Sniper got off to a really fast start in limited release, so it too could be a hit when it expands wide. By comparison, last January was led by Ride Along, but there were only two other films that didn't completely bomb. I want to say 2015 will start out on a winning note, but given the box office losing streak, it will likely pay to be pessimistic.

It is been more than six months since I reviewed any Dora the Explorer, but this week Dora in Wonderland comes out on DVD. What episodes are found on the DVD and is it worth the asking price?

It is another busy week for limited releases, including some that are earning overwhelmingly positive reviews. Unfortunately, like it usually is at this time of year, unless a limited release is earning Oscar buzz, it is very unlikely to find an audience in limited release. Any Day Now is the film I have the highest hopes for, but even for a film with 88% positive reviews, it will be a challenge.
