Theater counts: A Man Called Otto holds on as widest release as two new films debut
January 26, 2023
Our widest releases list this week is close to being a replay of last week with A Man Called Otto still occupying the top spot by playing in 3,957 cinemas. The Tom Hanks comedy-drama has scored just short of $60 million worldwide to date during its four-week run.
Two horror films make up the new wide releases this week. Brandon Cronenberg’s psychological sci-fi film, Infinity Pool, and Deon Taylor’s, Fear. The former, making its theatrical debut in 1,835 locations stars Alexander Skarsgård, Mia Goth, and Cleopatra Coleman and follows a couple who while staying at beach resort are guided by a mysterious woman and find themselves in a culture filled with violence, hedonism, and untold horror. Expected to debut in about 1,000 locations, the latter from Hidden Empire Releasing was shot in a mere 17 days during the height of the pandemic in August, 2020.
Rounding out the top five this week is still the number one movie in the land with Avatar: The Way of Water once again landing in second place with 3,600 locations, down 190 venues from last week. Filling out the third and fourth widest releases this week are studio stablemates Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and M3GAN, available in 3,447 and 3,409 cinemas, respectively. Finally, last week’s newcomer, Missing retains its opening week count of 3,025 theaters as it enters its second week at the box office. For those who missed the original run, Elvis will make its second run in theaters by playing in 841 locations. The Baz Luhrmann-directed film starring Tom Hanks and Austin Butler made its domestic debut back in June and went on to collect over $280 million worldwide.
Opening in limited release this week is Belgium’s Oscar selection Close. The film follows Leo and Remi, two thirteen-year-old best friends whose seemingly unbreakable bond is suddenly, tragically torn apart. Also opening in limited release this week is the French thriller, Kompromat. Based on true events, the film depicts the story of a French public servant who unwittingly finds himself in conflict with one of the modern era’s most powerful and dangerous forces: Russia’s FSB.
Looking ahead to next week we see the release of 80 for Brady. The sports comedy starring Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno, and Sally Field follows four best friends who live life to the fullest when they take a wild trip to the 2017 Super Bowl LI to see their hero Tom Brady play. 80 for Brady is expected to land in about 3,700 theaters across North America.
Note: The theater count for Fear is an estimate from Box Office Pro.
