Thursday Night Previews: Lego Lifts Off with $2.1 million in Combined Previews
February 8, 2019
The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part got off to a solid start with $2.1 million in previews. This includes $1.5 million last night and $600,000 from the January paid preview. This is a good result for a family film opening without the benefit of a school holiday. Granted, The Lego Batman Movie opened with $2.2 million during its previews in 2017, but as a comic book movie, it had more drawing power with adults and would be slightly more front-loaded. We don’t know for sure if The Second Part will make up the difference over the full weekend and match our $55 million prediction, but we will have a better idea tomorrow when the Friday estimates show up.
What Men Want topped expectations with $1.25 million during its previews. The reviews are not great at 45% positive, but that’s also not so bad that it will have a real negative effect on the film’s legs. For example, Night School’s reviews were 28% positive, but it turned $1.35 million in previews into a $27.26 million opening weekend. If What Men Want can have similar legs, then it will open with $25 million over the weekend, which is ahead of our prediction.
Cold Pursuit was well back with $540,000, which is significantly lower than the $700,000 in previews The Commuter managed last year and it only opened with $13.70 million. The Commuter did earn weaker reviews, so maybe Cold Pursuit will have better legs allowing it to top our $11 million prediction. We will know more tomorrow when Friday’s estimates are out.
Finally, The Prodigy earned $350,000 in previews. This is so low that it is hard to tell how it will do over the rest of the weekend, as there are not enough data to make a solid comparison. I’ve comfortable with our $7 million prediction for the moment.
