Weekend Wrap-Up: Jurassic World and Incredibles Combine for Biggest June Weekend

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom beat expectations with $148.02 million over the weekend, but it wasn’t the only monster hit in theaters. Incredibles 2 added $80.35 million during its second weekend of release, which helped the overall box office become the biggest June weekend of all time. The overall box office rose just 2.3%, but that was enough to break the record with $277 million. This is also 98% higher than the same weekend last year. 2018 has had a string of hits that have dominated their 2017 counterparts, even if they missed expectations, so it is no surprise that 2018 has a lead over 2017 in the year-over-year comparison. However, that lead is surprisingly larger. It has grown to 9.1% or $490 million at $5.85 billion to $5.36 billion. No year has started as fast as 2018 has, and even its estimated ticket sales are the best in the 2010s.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom opened with $148.02 million, which is higher than all but the most optimistic predictions. This is still $60 million lower than Jurassic World opened with, but this film also cost less to make, so it balances out. The reviews have slipped just below 50% positive, while it performed much better with CinemaScore earning an A minus. It also doesn’t have any significant competition next week, so it could hold on well for a blockbuster release.
Incredibles 2 fell to $80.35 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $349.79 million. It did fall 56%, which is a lot for family film, but its competition was fierce. It should bounce back this week and it doesn’t have direct competition until Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation comes out in mid-July. By the time that happens, this film should be close to the $500 million mark, if not over that milestone.
Ocean’s 8 held on well enough to top $100 million over the weekend, as it pulled in $11.55 million for a three-week total of $100.28 million. Given its legs, it should earn enough domestically to pay for its entire production budget, meaning it will just need to cover its global advertising budget internationally. Even if it fails that task, it will break even early in its home market run. There’s already talk of a sequel and I’m not surprised.
Tag dipped just 45% earning $8.25 million over the weekend for a ten-day total of $30.42 million. It could have the legs to get to $50 million domestically, assuming it can find an audience internationally and / or on the home market.
Deadpool 2 grabbed fifth place with $5.27 million for a six-week total of $304.17 million.
Meanwhile, Solo: A Star Wars Story was right behind with $4.51 million for a total of $202.64 million after a month of release. Had the film not needed such an expensive reshoot, this would have been a reason to celebrate. However, with a $250 million production budget, getting to $200 million domestically is just saving face.
SuperFly fell 50% during its sophomore stint with $3.40 million over the weekend for a total of $15.32 million. It is on pace for $20 million domestically, which isn’t bad for a film that cost $16 million to make.
