2016 - Awards Season - And the Oscar Goes to... La La Land Moonlight!
February 26, 2017
It’s Oscar night and we were live blogging the show. Read on the the highlights of what turned out to be a crazy night.
Notes and Reactions...
It's lucky number seven for La La Land, as it wraps up the night with Best Picture. Wait… what?? Total confusion on stage, as Moonlight gets Best Picture. Of all things to mess up, somehow Emma Stone’s Best Actress envelope was given to Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty, and they assumed La La Land had won when they saw the film’s name. There’s something you don’t see every day.
People are tweeting out pictures of Chrissy Teigen sleeping and I'm so jealous. I've been up since around 3 am and I want to go to bed.
Emma Stone makes it six wins for La La Land, as she scored the Best Actress Oscar.
Casey Affleck winning Best Lead Actor for Manchester by the Sea isn't really an upset, as it was the closest category of the night.
Damien Chazelle makes it five wins for La La Land, after picking up the Best Director Oscar.
Berry Jenkins and Tarell McCraney won Best Adapted Screenplay for Moonlight. This is the film's second Oscar.
Kenneth Lonergan won Best Original Script for Manchester by the Sea. This is the film's first Oscar.
It's four wins for La La Land. “City of Stars” won, which our readers predicted. I thought vote-splitting would cost it the win.
La La Land has taken the lead with three Oscars after winning for best Original Score.
La La Land finally wins its second award, this time for Cinematography.
And now I'm two for three with the short films, as Sing earns the upset for Best Live Action Short Film.
Our readers are now two for two when it comes to the short films, as The White Helmets wins the Best Documentary short.
Hacksaw Ridge becomes the first film to earn a second Oscar, picking up one for Best Editing.
The Jungle Book winning for Best Visual Effects was not a surprise. The visual effects in that movie were impeccable and arguably as important as any of the characters.
La La Land finally wins its first Oscar, taking home the prize for Production Design. The winners have been really spread out, so La La Land still has an excellent shot at being the biggest winner of the night.
Zootopia was widely expected to win for Best Feature-Length Animated film. However, it is worth pointing out that all five nominees were Oscar-worthy and there were at least a couple of snubs that could have won as well. (Finding Dory and You Name. among them.) 2016 was an amazing year for animated films.
The short films are notoriously difficult to predict. That said, Piper was an overwhelming favorite to win for Best Animated Short Film. It was likely the only animated short film most people saw.
The ceremony has been going on for more than 90 minutes and we've only gotten through a third of the categories. We definitely going past midnight EST tonight.
The Salesman won for Best Foreign-Language Film. This is what our readers predicted, so it can't be seen as a surprise.
Frankly any of the five women nominated for Best Support Actress deserved the win, but I'm happy Viola Davis finally got her Oscar for Fences.
On the other hand, Hacksaw Ridge winning for Best Sound Mixing was what I predicted.
I wanted Arrival to win for Sound Editing. I didn't think it would win, so this is a pleasant surprise. It also means my chances of winning our contest is close to zero. I would have to get nearly all of the rest of the Oscars right to win.
O.J.: Made in America won for Best Feature Documentary. This is not a surprise, but I am disappointed, because it isn't a real movie. It is a TV-miniseries.
Two surprises in a row, as Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them beat Jackie for Best Costume Design. If this keeps up, we could have a very weird Oscar night.
Suicide Squad won for Best Make-Up. Suicide Squad is an Oscar-winning film. I really thought Star Trek Beyond has this won.
We are off to a very predictable start, as Mahershala Ali won Best Supporting Actor for Moonlight. I don't think there are many people shocked by this result and it is well-deserved.
We still have a few minutes till the ceremony starts.
The categories and nominations / winners are...
BEST PICTURE
BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
BEST WRITING - ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
BEST DOCUMENTARY - FEATURE LENGTH
BEST DOCUMENTARY - SHORT FILM
SHORT FILM - LIVE ACTION
SHORT FILM - ANIMATED
