Per Theater Chart: Somebody Up There Likes These Films

There were a trio of films to top the $10,000 mark on the per theater chart. Somebody Up There Likes Me earned first place with $34,362 in its one theater. The overall number one film, Oz the Great and Powerful, earned second place with an average of $20,223 in nearly 4,000 theaters. The final film in the $10,000 club was The We and the I, which managed $10,774 in one theater.

There were quite a few new limited releases, but only a handful did respectable business. The Little Soldier was the best of the rest earning $6,900 in one theater. The Girl was next up with an average of $5,582 in two theaters. Beyond the Hills played in three theaters and earned an average of $4,874. The Silence did okay with an average of $3,996 in two theaters. Emperor earned more than $1 million over the weekend, which was much better than expected. However, it was playing in 261 theaters, for a per theater average of $3,886.

There were also a number of films that missed the Mendoza Line, starting with Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey, which earned an average of $1,112 in 23 theaters. Granted, it was playing in too many theaters for a limited release, but the whole point of the Mendoza Line is that it is too low, regardless of the circumstances. Ernest and Celestine was also playing in too many theaters, 27 to be exact, but it struggled even more with an average of just $880. The Monk was next with an average of $765 in 11 theaters. The ABCs of Death died with an average of $532 in 19 theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

• Kai Po Che got to $1 million, but that's as far as it will go. On the other hand, that's good for a Bollywood release.
• The Gatekeepers reached $1 million as well, but it has a good chance at getting to $2 million.
• Emperor earned more than $1 million over its opening weekend, so obviously it reached the $1 million mark.
• Silver Linings Playbook made it all the way to $120 million. It is now ahead of fellow Oscar winner, Life of Pi.
