Blu-ray Sales: February 24th, 2013: Winning the Game

April 14th, 2013

There were two new releases that had a legitimate claim on top spot on the Blu-ray sales chart for the week of February 24th, 2013. Argo sold the most units at 378,000 generating $8.68 million earning a opening week Blu-ray of 40%. On the other hand, Game of Thrones: Season Two generated the most revenue at $10.08 million, from 336,000 units sold. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 58%, which is fantastic, even compared to first run releases and not just TV on DVD releases. More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for February 19th, 2013 - Abridged Edition

February 20th, 2013

This week's list is a little shorter than usual, because of technical difficulties. I've been getting an average of one Blue Screen of Death per day for just over a week. It seems to happen most often when I open too many tabs in Firefox. Worse still, two of the sites that seem to set off the BSOD are YouTube and Rotten Tomatoes. Fortunately I've narrowed the problem down to a driver conflict for either my video or perhaps a Windows system driver. Or it could be bad RAM. Or it could be a bad power supply. Or perhaps a virus or other malware. So when I said I had it narrowed down the problem, I was lying. I don't have time to take the computer to get it fixed, not until the Oscars are over, but I promise to get caught up by the weekend. It is quite a good week for new releases with a number of contenders for Pick of the Week. The two main contender are Argo on Blu-ray Combo Pack and Game of Thrones: Season Two on DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack. While Argo is cleaning up during Awards Season, I've given Game of Thrones the edge here. More...

Featured 3D Blu-ray review: Top Gun

February 17th, 2013

Less than two year ago, I reviewed Top Gun for the fourth time. In that review, I jokingly mentioned I wouldn't have to review it again till it came out on 3D. ... This week it comes out on 3D. ... More...

IMAX: Dangerous Debut

February 13th, 2013

While it appears studios are dropping the wide 3D re-release strategy, Top Gun showed that opening in IMAX might be more lucrative. The film placed 11th overall with $1.97 million on 300 for an average of $6,552. This should give the 3D Blu-ray a boost in sales. (On a related note, I'm still waiting for the screener for this release, but hopefully it will arrive this week.) More...

Weekend Estimates: Identity Thief Makes Sneak Assault at the Box Office

February 10th, 2013

Universal has a winner on its hands this weekend, as Identity Thief is set to make a very impressive $36.5 million or so, according to their Sunday tracking, and that in spite of the big storm in the Northeast (reportedly causing a 10% at the box office) and mediocre reviews. The performance is perhaps helped by the surfeit of Oscar-hopefuls and action movies in theaters recently, and is clearly also a feather in the cap for stars Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy. The weekend's other opener, Side Effects is set for a more modest $10 million, which isn't exactly DOA, but is at best on life support. Perhaps good word of mouth will help it hang on in theaters for a while. More...

Blu-ray Sales: Rio Returns to the Top

September 14th, 2011

While Rio fell to third place on the DVD sales chart this week, it remained in first place on the Blu-ray sales chart with 70,000 units sold and $1.40 million in sales. Its totals reached 1.58 million units sold and $34.63 million in total sales. More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for August 30th, 2011

August 30th, 2011

Summer is officially over, both at the box office and on the home market. Granted, the theatrical releases are still really weak, but the TV on DVD releases are starting to become overwhelming. There are several such releases that are worth picking up, but none rise to the level of Pick of the Week. For that I went with The Coen Brothers Blu-ray Box Set. However, if you've made the leap to Blu-ray, then The Nightmare Before Christmas 3-D Blu-ray Combo Pack is worth an honorable mention. Meanwhile, there's a film called Norwegian Ninja coming out on DVD that has cult classic written all over it. I really hope the screener arrives soon. More...

Featured Blu-ray review: Top Gun: 25th Anniversary Edition

August 26th, 2011

This is the fourth time I've reviewed a home market release for Top Gun, which I believe is a personal record. Hopefully it will be the last for a long time. (The only way there will be another release any time soon is if they decide to give the movie a 3-D upgrade. I'm not ruling out that possibility.) So is this latest version worth picking up? More...
