DVD and Blu-ray Releases for May 8th, 2012

May 7th, 2012

It's yet another very slow week on the home market. Boy, I feel like a broken record saying that every week, but it is true. It's especially true this week, as I'm having trouble picking out any release that is worth of Pick of the Week. In the end I went with a Doctor Who release. There are three of them coming out this week, but Story 153: The Happiness Patrol is the only one that is truly good, as opposed to the other two, which are weak installments that have a few fans that defend them. Featured DVD / Blu-ray Review: Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie

May 7th, 2012

Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie is the second feature-length film based on an Adult Swim TV series. The first was Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters. I liked that movie, certainly more than the average critic, but it is rare for a sketch comedy show to make the leap to theaters successfully. Will Billion Dollar Movie be one of the rare exceptions? Or should they have stuck with the TV show? More...

Per Theater Chart is Feeling Green

March 7th, 2012

Dr. Seuss' The Lorax was surprisingly strong during its opening and that helped it win the race on top of the per theater chart with an average of $18,830. The only other two films in the $10,000 club, Being Flynn and Boy, were neck-and-neck at $10,998 and $10,622 respectively. More...

Weekend Estimates: Huge Weekend for Lorax Keeps Box Office on Track

March 4th, 2012

Universal will be celebrating this weekend as their good year gets a whole lot better thanks to the estimated $70 million opening of The Lorax. While not a record for March (a mark held firmly by Alice in Wonderland with $116 million), that will be enough for either second or third on the all time March openers list, basically level with 300's debut in 2007. Given its $65 million - $70 million production budget, the film will be a huge boost for the studio's animation arm. It also means that this weekend will be about 25% ahead of the same weekend last year. More...

Limited Releases Look to Earn a Billion Dollars

March 2nd, 2012

It's quite a busy week in terms of limited releases with nine films on this week's list. There are a couple that are earning very strong reviews, like Boy and Last Days Here. There are also a couple opening wider than the average limited release, like Paan Singh Tomar and Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie. Unfortunately, the widest release of the week, Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie, is also earning some of the weakest reviews of the week. More...
