Synopsis
Brilliant, visionary Nikola Tesla fights an uphill battle to bring his revolutionary electrical system to fruition, then faces thornier challenges with his new system for worldwide wireless energy. The film tracks Tesla’s uneasy interactions with his fellow inventor Thomas Edison and his patron George Westinghouse. Another thread traces Tesla’s sidewinding courtship of financial titan J.P. Morgan, whose daughter Anne takes a more than casual interest in the inventor. Anne analyzes and presents the story as it unfolds, offering a distinctly modern voice to this scientific period drama which, like its subject, defies convention.

This week’s list of limited releases isn’t very long and most of the new ones are earning reviews that are merely good, or worse. The new releases that are earning overwhelmingly positive reviews are The August Virgin and Desert One. Words on Bathroom Walls is opening in a lot of theaters, probably too many, which leaves Inception’s tenth-anniversary re-release as the film with the best chance at box office success.

It is another week of quantity over quality on VOD, with only a handful of films earning significant buzz and overall positive reviews. The noteworthy films include of couple of documentaries, Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind and Pretending I’m a Superman: The Tony Hawk Video Game Story, as well as a biopic, Tesla. However, the long-delayed horror flick, Prevenge, could be the biggest hit, as horror films have done well during the pandemic. It doesn’t have the star power Tesla has, but it has better reviews.
