It's a slow week by nearly every measure: big releases, overall quality, overall quantity, spotlight reviews, etc. This is great news for me since recently a package arrived with several DVDs, all of which were late. I'm not quite completely caught up, but I am very close. As for this week's releases, there were only a handful of releases that were even in contention for DVD Pick of the Week. Both The Savages - DVD and The Orphanage - DVD or Blu-ray earned excellent reviews, but their home market releases were only average. Cloverfield - DVD wasn't as good a movie, but the DVD had the best combination of movie quality and special features. The specter of a Blu-ray release notwithstanding, it is the DVD Pick of the Week.

The Counterfeiters was the only film to cross $10,000 on the per theater chart this week, pulling in $185,000 in 18 theaters for an average or $10,295. One must assume its Oscar Win boosted its box office this weekend.

There's a real slump in top-notch sites, but it is still early in the year and no real blockbusters have been released so far. There are a couple of sites on this week's list that are good, but none that are great and none that win the Weekly Website Award.

The weekend after the Oscars should see some award-winning limited releases expanding, and No Country for Old Men is expanding while The Counterfeiters could be as well (we don't have a theater count for the latter film). However, there is still plenty of room for new limited releases and City of Men could do well in its 75 theaters over the next three days.
