The Independent Spirit Awards are one of the earliest to announce their nominees, but they don't hand out the hardware until almost the very end. This year the big winner was Juno with three awards, which could be followed by a couple of Oscars tonight.

The Oscar nominations were announced today and there is no shortage of contenders.
In fact, with no real juggernaut to deal with, the competition is more up in the air that most years.

Another deceptively weak week for DVDs.
Sure, there appear to be plenty to choose from, but it feels like half the top 20 are Blade Runner releases.
In fact, one of the two DVD Picks of the Week are for that movie.
For those who are big fans of Blade Runner, grab the Four-Disc Collector's Edition - DVD, or 5-Disc Collector's Edition - Blu-Ray or 5-Disc Collector's Edition - HD-DVD if you can.
(Given the choice between those last two, pick 5-Disc Collector's Edition - Blu-Ray.)
For those who are huge fans of Blade Runner, and I mean stupid level fans of the movie, grab 5-Disc Ultimate Edition - DVD, 5-Disc Ultimate Edition - Blu-Ray, or 5-Disc Ultimate Edition - HD-DVD.
But good luck, I pre-ordered mine months ago and there are reports they are sold out in many places. The second DVD Pick of the Week goes to The Simpsons Movie - Blu-Ray.
The light extras are disappointing, but that transfer is immaculate.

This week, the Holiday Gift guide discusses movies as its theme, but not just any movie can get on this list.
This is for smaller movies, ones that might have slipped past most people's attention. The top ten movies of the year would also make great gifts, but you don't need me to tell you about them. (Except to say The Simpsons Movie doesn't come out on DVD and Blu-Ray until Tuesday.)
Here we have independent films, foreign films, and yes, a few Canadian films. ...
Okay, more than a few Canadian films.

It's the official start of award season as the Independent Spirit Award nominations were announced. Several films received nods, but I'm Not There and Juno were the big hits.

The overall box office leader, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, was also the leader on the per theater chart with an impressive $17,995 in over 4,000 theaters.
My Best Friend was reasonably close behind with an average of $15,082 in three theaters.
Meanwhile, Talk to Me exploded on the scene with more than $400,000 in 33 theaters for an average of $12,182.
This should be more than enough to earn some mainstream success.
Speaking of mainstream success, Rescue Dawn just missed the $10,000 club this week despite growing from 6 theaters to 38 and maintained an average of $9,555.

Rescue Dawn was the top draw on the per theater chart this weekend, earning an average of $18,388 in 6 theaters over the weekend and $27,979 since Wednesday.
The overall box office champ, The Transformers, placed a very close second with $17,577.
The re-release of Le Doulos grew by 10.51% to $10,346 in its lone theater and made it into the $10,000 club.

Only one film was able to top $10,000 on the per theater chart, but it did so with ease.
Sicko earned $68,969 in its lone theater, and also sold out all 43 advanced screenings.
This is a very good sign for Friday's wide release, although I'm still not confident it will open in the top five.

Only one new release topped $10,000 on the per theater chart this week, and only two films in total were able to do that.
That new release was the overall box office leader, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, which pulled in an average of $14,663.
The only holdover was 12:08 East of Bucharest with $10,108 in its lone theater.

Only three films were able to crack into the $10,000 club on the per theater chart.
The only new release to do so was Knocked Up, which was barely able to reach that figure with $10,690.
Second place went to The Golden Door with $10,169, while the overall number one film, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, earned third place with $10,134.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, and its record-breaking theater count of 4,362 were able to top the per theater chart this weekend with $26,303. As impressive as that was, both Shrek the Third and Spider-Man 3 opened with better averages. Paprika opened in second place with $17,797, but while that's a great start, its niche market appeal will prevent it from expanding wide. Last week's winner, Once, fell to third with $16,607, but, given the film's expansion, this was an amazing hold.
The Golden Door opened with an average of $13,872 in two theaters while Shrek the Third was close behind with $12,713.

Once won a close race for top spot on the per theater chart, just topping Shrek the Third $30,951 to $29,507.
Brand Upon the Brain! held up better than expected, earning an average of $18,907 in its three theaters while Chalk was the only other film to top $10,000 with $13,363.

Either it was a really slow week or my Google-Fu is way off, because there's a short list this week. Not only were there very few new / updated sites, but there was nothing that jumped out as award winners. I was tempted to give the award to The Transformers - Official Site just for the new trailer, but I already geeked-out over that site when the first trailer came out. In the end there just wasn't a site worthy of the award this week.

It's a bad week for limited releases with only a couple managing to earn overwhelmingly positive reviews, and none of the wider releases earning even moderately positive reviews.
Of the films on this week's list, the one I'm cheering for the most is Severance, but its chances are mixed.

There were a few new flash sites to launch this week, but while there might be a couple future winners among those sites, it was a long time resident on this week's list that walked away with top honors. That site was Hot Fuzz - Official Site, which probably could have won several weeks ago if the features were added all at once. However, it's much better to spread the updates out in order to get people coming back week after week.
