We are getting closer to the Thanksgiving long weekend and the official start of the holiday shopping season. Because of this, there are plenty of great releases coming out this week, including Up on a 4-Disc Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack, which is clearly DVD Pick of the Week material. Also a DVD Pick of the Week is Monsters, Inc. - 4-Disc Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack, while the late arriving Monsters vs. Aliens - Blu-ray earns an honorable mention. With a massive list of releases, including nearly a dozen spotlight reviews, we have once again needed to split the release report into two parts. The second part can be found here. More...

DVD Rentals - New Releases Nearly Invisible

DVD Sales - Knight Rises

January 7th, 2009

This week, new releases were practically non-existent on the DVD sales chart. In fact, the best selling releases to make their debut on the chart were the late releases from last week. The best seller overall this week was The Dark Knight with 1.69 million units and $37.11 million in consumer retail spending for the week, giving it just a hair under 12.00 million units sold and $252.82 million in sales after three. This is clearly the best selling DVD of 2008 having sold over 1 million units more than WALL-E and nearly $70 million more in retail sales. More...

DVD Rentals - Burn, Baby, Burn

January 7th, 2009

This week on the rental charts we have late releases from the week of the 16th, all the releases from the week of the 23rd, and early releases from the 30th. The number on rental for the week was Burn After Reading, which generated about a sixth more revenue than second place Death Race. More...

DVD Sales - Mamma Hot on Sales Chart

January 1st, 2009

There were only three new releases to chart this week, sort of. Call in three and a half new releases, but we will get to that in a bit. On the top of the sales chart this week was Mamma Mia!, which sold 3.72 million units for $77.68 million in consumer retail spending. More...

No new openings left Bolt out of the top five with $4.94 million on 1916 screens in 11 markets for a total of $28.69 million. Its best market was Russia where it slipped to second place with $1.20 million on 570 screens for a three-week total of $10.73 million, while it added $1.06 million on 412 screens over the weekend in Spain for a total of $3.96 million after two. The film has yet to open in most major markets, and won't until the new year, but when it is done it should surpass its domestic total while aiming for $250 million worldwide. More...

DVD Releases for December 16, 2008

December 16th, 2008

This week is a confusing one on the home market as there are DVDs coming out on Tuesday the 16th, as usual, and on Friday the 19th, and Sunday the 21st as well. While there are a number of great releases that are spread out over three days, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is the best on any day, and worthy of the DVD Pick of the Week. More...

Awards Season - The Curious Case of the Frost/Nixon Globe Nominations

December 12th, 2008

The latest set of Awards Season nominations were handed out today as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced their nominations. There was not much in the way of surprises, and it is hard to look at one film and say it was the big winner, but Frost/Nixon and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button come the closest. More...

The only opening of note this weekend came in Russia, however, the film struggled there placing sixth with $353,000 on 128 screens. November 17th, 2008

High School Musical 3: Senior Year remained in second place with $14.63 million on 4413 screens in 30 markets for a total of $110.38 million internationally. This is more than it will make domestically by the end of its run, and at this pace hitting $200 million worldwide will not be an issue, as it has openings in Russia, Australia, and Japan still to go. Its biggest market of the weekend was Italy where it made $2.60 million on 487 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.02 million. Meanwhile, its biggest market overall was the U.K. with $31.44 million, including $2.39 million on 470 screens over the past weekend. More...

October 26th, 2008

This includes France, where the film remained in first place with $3.15 million on 443 screens for the week and $7.68 million after two. Meanwhile, it opened in Italy with $2.16 million on 378 screens, which was enough for second place in that market. More...

International Details - Updates and More

October 19th, 2008

First some updates on Wednesday's numbers. Due to Columbus Day, we were relying on studio estimates instead of final numbers, and while they were mostly accurate, they were not entirely accurate. The Russia film, Admiral (Koltchak), did indeed top the charts with $12.51 million on 1,223 screens in 2 markets over the weekend and $13.31 million in total. Meanwhile, Eagle Eye added $10.88 million on 3,030 screens in 38 markets for a still early total of $29.41 million. Mamma Mia! continues its quest for $400 million with $8.37 million on 3,713 screens in 46 markets for a total of $390.72 million. These three films were very close to the original figures, however, the rest of the top five was different than originally reported, starting with... More...

International Top Five - Top of the Chart is Truly International

October 16th, 2008

We had a new winner on top of the international charts as the Russia film, Admiral (Koltchak) opened in its native market with $11.35 million and $1.47 million in neighboring Ukraine. Its total weekend revenue of $12.82 million came on 1,088 screens, giving the film an impressive per screen average of $11,783. It has to be considered a hit already, but how well it holds on will determine how fast the studio will recoup its $20 million production budget. More...

International Top Five - A Little Song and Dance Overtakes a Superhero

October 9th, 2008

Thanks to an impressive opening in Italy, Mamma Mia! was able to overtake Hancock on the yearly international charts. Over the weekend the film added $14.25 million on 4,222 screens in 48 markets for an international total of $377.29 million, just ahead of the $375 million Hancock has brought in. In Italy, the film opened in first place with $2.52 million on 400 screens, while it added $1.36 million on 403 screens in the U.K. for a total of $110.14 million after thirteen weeks of release. Worldwide the film has amassed an astounding $520.01 million, and with Japan ahead, it should reach the all-time top 50 before long. More...

International Top Five - Mamma Mia Still Singing a Profitable Song

October 1st, 2008

Mamma Mia! remained in top spot on the international chart with a nearly identical result to last week, earning $15.62 million on 4,152 screens in 44 markets for a total of $356.63 million internationally and $498.82 million worldwide. This includes an estimated $4.3 million on 436 screens in Russia, which was easily enough for first place. The film is also still cruising in the U.K. adding $1.10 million on 418 screens for a total of $113.40 million after nearly three months of release. At this point, one has to assume that Titanic's record is not out of reach, and that the studio might be willing to give it the extra push to put it over the top. More...

International Top Five - Mamma Mia Holds onto its High Note

September 24th, 2008

No major openings didn't hurt Mamma Mia! too much as it remained on top of the international charts with $15.15 million on 4036 screens on 45 markets for a total of $334.87 million. This includes $2.4 million on 462 screens in France, but that was for the full week. Meanwhile in the U.K. it added $1.30 million on 443 screens for a total of $110.87 million after nearly three months of release, which is not that far off Titanic 's record of roughly $120 million. More...

International Top Five - Another Milestone for Mamma Mia

September 17th, 2008

Mamma Mia! remained in first place with $20.27 million on 4303 screens in 45 markets for a total of $309.59 million. It is only the fifth film this year to reach $300 million internationally and I think most would agree it is the least likely. Openings this week were highlighted by France, where it made $2.4 million, which was enough for first place in that market. Additionally, it remained flat in South Korea adding $3.35 million on 518 screens for a total of $9.79 million after two weeks of release. It was not as strong in its opening in Mexico, on the other hand, placing second with just $785,000 on 292 screens. Strong holds and a number of markets remaining, it could hit $400 million internationally. More...

International Top Five - Mamma Mia Hits a High Note

September 10th, 2008

Mamma Mia! captured top spot thanks to a record-breaking debut in South Korea. In that market, it opened with $3.40 million on 513 screens over the weekend for a total of $5.08 million, which was the best opening for a musical in South Korean history; however, it still had to settle for second place. The film was also in second place in the U.K. with $2.52 million on 493 screens for a total of $99.42 million after two months of release. Overall, the film made $16.36 million on 3,430 screens in 39 markets for a total of $281.54 million internationally and $417.98 million worldwide. More...

International Top Five - Milestone Weekend for Knight

September 4th, 2008

The Dark Knight fell hard this past weekend, but it still managed a major milestone reaching $400 million internationally while topping $900 million worldwide. The lack of new markets meant its weekend haul was down 43% to $19.46 million on 6124 screens in 62 markets and now has $413.73 million internationally and $916.02 million worldwide. Its best market of the weekend was Germany, where it remained in first place with $4.58 million on 754 screens over the weekend for a total of $17.61 million after two. This is already more than double what the original made in total. Meanwhile the film's best market overall remained the U.K. where it has made $84.08 million, including $1.67 million on 396 screens over this past weekend. More...

International Top Five - Knight is King

August 27th, 2008

The Dark Knight remained in first place with $34.28 million on 7194 screens in 62 markets for a total of $377.64 million internationally and $867.06 million worldwide. This week the film debuted in first place in Germany with $9.79 million on 754 screen, which is roughly five times what the original made when it opened there in 2005. It also remained in first place in France with $5.8 million on 820 screens for a total of $17.7 million, which is more than the original made in total. Its best market so far remains the U.K. where it has made $79.84 million, including 2.67 million on 440 screens this past weekend. On the other hand, the film is running out of markets to open in, and it will have trouble matching its domestic total. Perhaps it will reach $1 billion worldwide, but that's not a sure thing. International Top Five - Knight Returns to Top

August 21st, 2008

The Dark Knight reclaimed first place on the international chart with $42.4 million on 7700 screens in 61 markets for a total of $328.6 million internationally and just over $800 million worldwide, which puts it ahead of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull for the year. This week it opened in first place in France and Spain $9.6 million on 818 screens in the former and $6.85 million on 570 screens in the latter. Meanwhile in South Korea the film was down just 23% earning $3.47 million on 463 screens for a total of $13.92 million after just two weeks. The film is also still in first place in the U.K. added $4.30 million on 499 screens for a total of $74.91 million, which is still a bit behind Mamma Mia!'s running tally of $84.34 million, and it is unlikely that it will catch it in the end in that market. More...

International Top Five - Mummy's Milestone

August 13th, 2008

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor significantly expanded its reach this weekend, which allowed it to remain in top spot with $55.96 million on 6396 screens in 50 markets for a total of $141.94 million. The film had a trio of major market debuts this weekend earning first place in Germany with $6.42 million on 650 screens, in France with an estimated $5 million on 572 screens, and in Taiwan with $3.6 million on 61 screens, which was the best opening of the year so far. On the other hand, the film had to settle for second place in the U.K. with $5.70 million on 477 screens over the weekend, however, it has earned $8.53 million in total, which would have been enough for first place. As for holdovers, the film is still in first place in Mexico adding $2.36 million on 431 screens over the weekend for a total of $10.50 million after two weeks. Tomb of the Dragon Emperor will have little trouble reaching $200 million internationally, and it should become the biggest hit of the franchise on the international scene. More...

Olympic-Sized Box Office Haul

August 11th, 2008

Four. The Dark Knight has reigned on top of the box office charts for four weekends now. The last film to last on top so long was Return of the King, which opened more than four years ago. That said, while The Dark Knight is dominating, the new releases are not pulling their weight and the overall box office slipped to $120 million over the weekend, which was 21% lower than last weekend, and 22% lower than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2008 has earned $6.14 billion, which is lower than 2007's pace but by less than 1%, as this time last year movies had earned $6.17 billion at the box office. More...

Will Pineapple Defeat Batman?

August 6th, 2008

Like last week, this week we have two more new wide releases, and like last week, The Dark Knight has a shot at retaining its crown. Also of note, the two new releases are coming out tonight because the Olympics are starting on Friday and they want to avoid going up against the Olympic opening ceremonies... Wait... People watch the Olympic opening ceremonies? More...

International Top Five - Mummy Ends Summer on Strong Note

August 6th, 2008

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor started its international run in about a third of the world scoring first place with $61.93 million on 4094 screens in 27 markets. This includes $9.24 million on 723 screens in South Korea over the weekend, and $13.11 million in total, which represents the best opening for a non-local film this year. The film was also fantastic in its opening in Russia scoring a reported $12.7 million there. Meanwhile in Spain it pulled in $6.48 million on 554 screens while in Mexico it earned $4.99 million on 430 screens, finishing first by significant margins in both markets. Next up for the film is the U.K., France, and Germany this weekend, Japan next weekend, while it doesn't end its run till September when it debuts in Italy. More...

Dark Knight Continues to Light Up Box Office

August 4th, 2008

For the third weekend in a row, The Dark Knight came out on top at the box office -- the first time this year we've had a three-time champ. Unfortunately, the film didn't come out on top because it beat expectations by a massive margin, but because The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor missed expectations. That led to a drop at the overall box office by just over 15% from last weekend to $153 million. This is also lower than the same weekend last year by just under 14%. Meanwhile, 2008's and 2007's year-to-date numbers are nearly identical at $5.93 billion, with this year a tiny, tiny amount lower. More...

International Details - Milestone Weekend

August 3rd, 2008

Hancock fell 56% to $20.22 million on 7516 screens in 70 markets, however, that was still enough for second place on the international chart this week, and lifted its totals to $295.58 million internationally and $502.06 million worldwide, reaching a major milestone. The film's best market of the week was Spain where it remained in first place with $3.98 million on 575 screens for a total of $16.86 million. It is also performing well in Germany where it held on to second place with $1.70 million on 755 screens over the weekend and $33.62 million after four. However, it is starting to slip in the U.K. falling to fifth place with $1.40 million on 400 screens, but its total of $45.15 million in that market is still fantastic. Hancock likely hit $300 million early last week, and it has yet to open in Japan and Italy. More...

Dark Days for New Releases? - Correction

July 31st, 2008

Two more new wide releases make their debut tomorrow, but we could have the first threepeat winner of the year as the new number one movie of the year, The Dark Knight, is still going strong. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor does have a slight edge going into this weekend, but it could be close. There is a troubling sign as neither film looks likely to match last year's number one film and with 2008 barely ahead of 2007, any weakness could result in 2008 losing its lead. More...

Dark Knight Continues its Record Breaking Run

July 29th, 2008

The Dark Knight added a few more records to its impressive list of accomplishments, but it wasn't enough to prevent the overall box office from suffering, as it was down to $181 million over the weekend. That represents a stunning 31% drop-off from last weekend. However, since last weekend was the largest weekend on record, this was not surprising. What was a little surprising was the year-to-year decline; granted, it was down less than 2% from the same weekend last year, but that's still disappointing. As for the year-to-date numbers, strong midweek numbers helped push 2008 into the lead, barely, with 2008 earning $5.68 billion to $5.67 billion for 2007. More...

International Details - Panda Continues to Perform

July 27th, 2008

For the third week in a row, Kung Fu Panda performed excellently on the international scene, but was not on par with the top of the chart. Over the previous weekend, the film finished in third place with $29.02 million on 4460 screens in 51 screens for a total of $273.20 million. This week the film opened three of the four Scandinavian markets including Denmark where it opened in first place with $1.10 million on 87 screens over the weekend and $1.23 million in total. Meanwhile, the film only managed third in Norway with $834,000 on 105 screens over the weekend and $1.2 million in total and it managed third place in Sweden with $689,000 on 149 screens and $840,000 in total. Additionally, the film made $3.02 million on 466 screens over the weekend for a total of $27.57 million after three weeks. Next up for the film is Japan this weekend while it opens in Italy at the end of the month. More...

I Want to Believe in the New Releases

July 24th, 2008

Two new wide releases make their debut today, but neither of them have a legitimate shot at first place. In fact, it would take a shocking result for Step Brothers and X-Files: I Want to Believe to earn more combined than The Dark Knight will make during its second weekend of release. The real competition for The Dark Knight is The Simpsons movie, which opened this time last year. More...

Record Number of Records?

July 22nd, 2008

Wow.

It is always better to underestimate demand and be pleasantly surprised, but The Dark Knight beat practically all expectations. It is such a huge hit that its weekend haul was better than the industry as a whole managed last weekend, and more than the industry made the same weekend last year. In fact, the $254 million weekend haul was a biggest all time. Needless to say, there was substantial growth this past weekend and the overall box office was up 68% from last weekend and 64% from the same weekend last year. Meanwhile, 2008 is still behind 2007 $5.37 billion to $5.41 billion, but that lead won't last. More...

Weekend Estimates: Dark Knight Sets New Weekend Record

July 20th, 2008

After a massive opening day on Friday, a new weekend record looked inevitable for The Dark Knight, and it delivered the goods this morning with Warner Bros. estimating an opening weekend total of $155.34 million. Since the movie actually scored better on Friday than originally projected, it seems likely that WB is being cautious in their projection, and a good day on Sunday could see the movie come close to $160 million when all is said and done. More...

International Details - Panda Throws Its Weight Around

July 20th, 2008

Kung Fu Panda grew to its biggest yet pulling in $45.32 million on 6314 screens in 49 markets for a total of $221.64 million. This includes openings in France where it placed second with $8.64 million on 743 screens for the full week and in Spain where it topped the charts with $6.29 million on 581 screens. The film's best holdover was The U.K. where it slipped a spot to third with $5.55 million on 456 screens for a two-week total of $21.57 million. It also held well in Germany adding $4.54 million on 838 screens for a two-week total of $11.14 million while it now has $20.38 million in Australia, including $3.17 million on 361 screens during this past weekend. Meanwhile, the film has yet to open in Italy or Japan, as well as a few other smaller markets, and should have no trouble reaching $300 million before long. More...

Friday Estimates: Dark Knight Smashes Single Day Record

July 19th, 2008

Movie Website Reviews for Weekend of July 18, 2008

July 19th, 2008

Darkest Before the Dawn

July 17th, 2008

One of the most anticipated films of the year opens today and The Dark Knight should be huge. Absolutely huge. In fact, there are even those who think the film will make more than the top five did this time last year, which would be a huge boost to 2008 in its race with 2007. More...

International Details - Panda Packs on the Pounds

July 13th, 2008

Kung Fu Panda saw its weekend numbers climb by close to 70%, and its weekend haul of $40.16 million on 5325 screens in 40 markets was the best of its run so far. A run that has brought in $154.13 million so far. However, it still remained in second place thanks to the opening of Hancock. The film had a pair of second place openings including the U.K. where it made $8.63 million on 446 screens over the weekend for a total of $11.96 million. Meanwhile in Germany it was not as strong with $4.48 million on 831 screens, but it still managed second place. The film also slipped to second place in Australia, but it held well down just 24% to $3.83 million on 363 screens over the weekend for a total of $13.63 million. More...

2008 Preview: July

July 1st, 2008

July is going to have a tough time following June. Last month only one movie missed expectations by any meaningful degree which helped 2008 climb above 2007's pace.
