Synopsis

Blessed with the extraordinary gift of guiding the imaginations of others, Doctor Parnassus is cursed with a dark secret. An inveterate gambler, thousands of years ago he made a bet with the devil, Mr. Nick, in which he won immortality. Centuries later, on meeting his one true love, Dr. Parnassus made another deal with the devil, trading his immortality for youth, on condition that when his daughter reached her 16th birthday, she would become the property of Mr Nick. Valentina is now rapidly approaching this "coming of age" milestone and Dr. Parnassus is desperate to protect her from her impending fate. Mr. Nick arrives to collect but, always keen to make a bet, renegotiates the wager. Now the winner of Valentina will be determined by whoever seduces the first five souls. Enlisting a series of wild, comical and compelling characters in his journey, Dr. Parnassus promises his daughter's hand in marriage to the man that helps him win. In this race against time, Dr. Parnassus must fight to save his daughter in a never-ending landscape of surreal obstacles - and undo the mistakes of his past once and for all.

Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Full financial estimates for this film, including domestic and international box office, video sales, video rentals, TV and ancillary revenue are available through our research services. For more information, please contact us at research@the-numbers.com.

DVD Sales: New Releases Fail to Overtake Avatar

May 12th, 2010

This week's selection of new releases were relatively slim, leaving Avatar on top of the DVD Sales Chart. Over its first full week of release, the film sold 1.77 million units, lifting its total to 5.73 million units and $96.22 million in consumer spending at retail. It is already the second best selling DVD of 2010 and it might take top spot in as few as two weeks. More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for April, 27th, 2010

April 27th, 2010

After Avatar dominated last week's list, the selection of releases this week is not any better. There are only two first run releases of note, It's Complicated on DVD and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus on Blu-ray, while there are a few smaller releases that are also worth picking up. To find the Pick of the Week, however, we have to travel back in time as a couple of late releases finally found their way to my desk this week. Those late releases are Defendor (Buy from Amazon: DVD or Buy from Amazon.ca: Blu-ray) and Yesterday Was A Lie (DVD) and they share the Pick of the Week honors. More...

International Details: Squeakquel Squeezed out of the Top Five

February 14th, 2010

For the first time during its international run, Alvin and the Chipmunks 2: The Squeakquel missed the top five and placed sixth with $7.10 million on 3,699 screens in 42 markets for a total of $200.87 million internationally and $413.03 million worldwide. With no major market openings left, the film will likely fall further down the chart over the coming weeks, but it has already made a huge profit, so Fox will be more than happy. More...

International Details: Oceans are Anything But Blue

February 8th, 2010

Oceans opened in its native France and that helped it climb into sixth place with $9.52 million on 888 screens in 4 markets for a total of $16.98 million. It earned third place in its native market with $5.39 million on 542 screens while it was down just 7% during its sophomore stint in Japan with $3.48 million on 303 screens over the weekend for a total of $10.81 million after two. Awards Season: Avatar Not Hurting for Oscar Nominations

February 2nd, 2010

Oscar nominations were announced at 5:38 this morning, continuing a tradition that have never been adequately explained to me. (Why so early in the morning? Does earning an Oscar nomination become sweeter if people have to wake you up to congratulate you?) Leading the way in nominations were Avatar and The Hurt Locker, both of which pick up nine nods each, many of them in the same categories. More...

International Details: Complicated in Sixth Place

January 31st, 2010

It's Complicated saw its weekend haul climb 16%, but it still fell out of the top five. It added $10.37 million over the weekend on 2,665 screens in 32 markets for a total of $50.92 million after a month of release. The film opened in third place in Germany with $2.40 million on 552 screens over the weekend and $2.74 million in total. Meanwhile in the U.K. it added $1.84 million on 431 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.72 million after three weeks of release. With debuts in Japan, South Korea, and Italy still ahead of it, it could reach $100 million internationally to go with its $100 million domestic total. More...

International Details: Up in the Charts

January 24th, 2010

Up in the Air started its international run in sixth place with $5.83 million on 936 screens in 9 markets. This includes a fifth place debut in the U.K. where it earned $2.13 million on 325 screens while it also managed fifth in Australia with $1.61 million on just 173 screens. While it is hard for films to open in limited release domestically and expand wide, it is usually a lot harder for these films to thrive internationally. After all, many international markets are simply too small to have a thriving limited release marketplace. It will be interesting to see if this film will be able to take its performance during Awards Season and turn it into a successful international run despite this. More...

Last Finishes First on the Per Theater Chart

January 20th, 2010

The Last Station started its run on top of the per theater chart with an average of $24,574 in three theaters, which was nearly double its nearest competitor. That film was Crazy Heart, which remained in second place with an average of $13,776. That was a decline of just 1.6% from last weekend despite some significant expansion. With a couple of Golden Globe wins, there's little doubt it will remain in theaters for some time to come. Fish Tank was in a virtual tie with an average of $13,750 in two theaters; in fact, since that is still an estimate, it might climb into second place. On the other hand, since Avatar was right behind with $13,025, it could slip a spot. The final film in the $10,000 club was The Book of Eli with an average of $10,540, which was better than expected. International Details - More International Flavor

January 17th, 2010

More than half the films on this week's International Details column were international films, starting with sixth place Io, loro E Lara. That film placed first in Italy with $7.56 million on 608 screens over the weekend, giving it $12.91 million in total. More...

Avatar Still Filling Theaters

January 12th, 2010

Avatar returned to the top of the per theater chart thanks to its record-breaking weekend result. It earned more than $50 million in 3,422 theaters for an average of $14,701. Crazy Heart was very close behind with an average of $14,004 in 33 theaters, which suggests further room to expand. Likewise, The Lovely Bones could do reasonably well this Friday when it expands after pulling in an average of $12,857 this weekend; however, there is a note of caution, as the film is still playing in only three theaters. More...

Imaginarium Tops the Per Theater Chart

January 5th, 2010

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus topped the per theater chart this weekend, based on reports from theaters in the United States. The film earned $128,000 in 4 theaters for an average of $31,909, which is roughly what it made last weekend. It is also playing in many more theaters in Canada, but numbers have not been reported from those locations, at least so far this week. The final figures may therefore, as last week, push the final average down considerably. Second place went to to Lovely Bones, which climbed more than 54% to an average of $21,559 in three theaters. This is excellent news for its planned expansion in a couple of weeks, assuming it doesn't fall by the same amount next week. White Ribbon opened next with an average of $19,949, also in three theaters. The overall number one film, Avatar, was just a fraction behind, earning an average of $19,789. At this point, we've nearly run out of superlatives to describe the film's box office run and it is far from over. Crazy Heart saw growth over the weekend, up 38% to an average of $18,416. 3 Idiots expanded somewhat and earned a very impressive average of $11,322 in 132 theaters. A Single Man returned to the $10,000 club with an average of $10,586 in 46 theaters. The final film in the $10,000 club was Sherlock Holmes, which fell sharply but still managed an average of $10,097. More...

Avatar Repeats its Win on the Per Theater Chart

December 29th, 2009

As it did on the overall chart, Avatar led the way on the per theater chart, earning an average of $21,880. Second place went to the overall second place film, Sherlock Holmes, which pulled in an average of $18,031. 3 Idiots did something most Bollywood films don't manage to do, namely top $10,000 on the per theater chart. Additionally, it was a wider release than most of its compadres, which makes this opening even more impressive. Crazy Heart expanded somewhat, but still remained strong with an average of $13,321 and this makes hitting milestones much more likely. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel was the third wide release to crack $10,000 with an average of $13,210. Finally we get to Lovely Bones, which is down to an estimated average of $12,667. This is roughly a third of its opening weekend average and it still hasn't expanded, which doesn't bode well. More...

Very Limited Releases On Christmas Weekend

December 24th, 2009

A very short list of limited releases on this week's list. So short that using the plural is not 100% accurate. That said, the one release that is coming out is generating some buzz, but not always for the right reasons. More...

International Details: Assassin Takes on the Competition

December 6th, 2009

Ninja Assassin started its international run in sixth place with $5.30 million on 665 screens in 9 markets over the weekend for a total of $5.97 million. Most of those markets were in Asia, including South Korea, where it opened in second place with $2.97 million on 401 screens over the weekend and $3.55 million in total. More...

2009 Preview: December

December 1st, 2009

November turned out to be a good month with more films meeting or exceeding expectations that missing. We also saw records broken as 2009 marches closer to the all-time record, and the possibility of becoming the first year to hit $10 billion in total ticket sales growing. It won't need that much to get there, and even if just one or two of the predicted $100 million hits this month get to that milestone, we will still finish the year by breaking records. More...

International Details - 51 Goes Planetwide

November 29th, 2009

Planet 51 started its international run in a limited fashion, but was only a little better than its domestic opening. Its biggest market was Russia, where it placed fourth with $1.49 million on 344 screens, which is on par with its opening here, perhaps a little bit stronger. The film also placed fourth in Italy with $1.16 million on 255 screens, which is again on par with the US, but perhaps a little weaker. Overall, it landed in sixth place with $3.22 million on 894 screens in 6 markets during its opening weekend, but should improve this weekend when it opens in Spain, Mexico, and Brazil. More...

International Details - Healthy Imagination

November 22nd, 2009

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus climbed into sixth place with $3.20 million on 764 screens in 6 markets for a total of $21.40 million after a month of release. The film opened in fifth place in France with $2.14 million on 234 screens, but that was for the full week. It cracked $10 million in Italy during its run with a total of $10.36 million, including $861,000 on 247 screens this past weekend. More...

International Details - Couples Charge Forward

November 14th, 2009

Couples Retreat expanded this past weekend but just missed the top five with $5.84 million on 1,373 screens in 18 markets for a total of $28.92 million after a month of release. The film opened in third place in Germany under the name All Inclusive, with $2.55 million on 338 screens while it also took third place in Mexico with $446,000 on 235 screens. Next up for the film is Spain next weekend and Italy the weekend after that, while it doesn't end its run until March when it opens in France. More...

International Details - Not Taking Any Chances

November 7th, 2009

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs fell out of the top five but still earned $5.18 million on 2568 screens in 39 markets for a total of $52.45 million so far. This was only 31% lower than last weekend, with no major market openings. In fact, the film doesn't have another major market opening till it debuts in Australia at the end of the month, while it still has openings in Italy and Spain by the end of the year, and it doesn't end its run till early next year with openings in Germany and some midlevel markets. International Details - An Ugly Milestone

October 31st, 2009

The Ugly Truth reached a major milestone over the weekend with $5.75 million on 2046 screens in 55 markets for a total of $102.27 million internationally. Its biggest market of the weekend was Spain, where it added $1.86 million on 360 screens for a total of $5.17 million. With a debut in Italy a few weeks away, it will likely fall sharply next weekend, but should have no trouble earning $200 million worldwide before its run is over. More...

International Details - Number Six for District Nine, Redux

October 25th, 2009

District 9 returned to sixth place with $6.20 million on 2233 screens in 44 markets for a total of $77.12 million international and $192.36 million. The film opened in first place in South Korea with $1.60 million on 287 screens over the weekend and $1.88 million in total. On the other hand, it had to settle for second place in Brazil with $865,000 on 204 screens over the weekend for a total of $968,000 and Mexico wasn't as strong with $666,000 on 250 screens, but that was still enough for second place. The film still has a couple markets left to open in, but none are major markets. This will make it hard to reach $100 million internationally, but it could make to $200 million worldwide by this time next week. More...

More...

November 22nd, 2009

The film opened in fifth place in France with $2.14 million on 234 screens, but that was for the full week. It cracked $10 million in Italy during its run with a total of $10.36 million, including $861,000 on 247 screens this past weekend. More...
