Synopsis

THE HUNTER is the story of Martin, a skilled and ruthless mercenary sent into the Tasmanian wilderness on a hunt for a tiger believed to be extinct. Hired by an anonymous company that wants the tiger’s genetic material, Martin arrives in Tasmania posing as a scientist. He proceeds to set up base camp at a broken-down farmhouse, where he stays with a family whose father has gone missing. Usually a loner, Martin becomes increasingly close to the family; however, as his attachment to the family grows, Martin is led down a path of unforeseen dangers, complicating his deadly mission.

After a run of several good weeks, it is a complete disaster on the home market this week. The best selling first run release will be... nothing. This is because there is no first run release coming out this week. According to Amazon.com, the best selling new release of the week is Midsomer Murders: Set 20, while the top ten is dominated by limited releases and Blu-ray catalogue titles. This makes choosing a Pick of the Week difficult, because there are so few prime releases. Rocko's Modern Life: Season Three is on the short list for contenders, as is The Hunter on Blu-ray. But in the end, I went with God Bless America on either DVD or Blu-ray. It's a great movie and there's a surprising number of extras on the DVD. More...

Damsels in Distress topped the per theater chart with an average of $14,647 in four theaters. This suggests some potential to expand, although it is too soon to tell if the film will earn some measure of mainstream success. Bully slipped to second place with an average of $12,292 in six theaters, but it should expand now that it has been given a PG-13 rating. It's a pretty big week for limited releases, although due to the holidays, we don't have hard theater counts for most of them. There are a large number of films that are earning some real measure of buzz and / or very positive reviews. Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope might have had the best hope at finding an audience, but it is coming out on Video on Demand as well as in theaters. Likewise, The Hunter has an impressive cast and good reviews, but opened Video on Demand previously, and that tends to kill a film's box office chances. Damsels in Distress could be the big hit as well as it does have a few actors, and a director, that have Indie cred. More...
