Synopsis
After a fifteen-year absence, Christian returns home to rural New South Wales for the marriage of his father, Henry, the wealthy owner of the local mill that's been the economic bedrock of the community for generations. Christian gets reacquainted with his old friend Oliver and finds himself drawn to Oliver’s family, which includes wife Charlotte, daughter Hedvig, and father-in-law Walter. Unexpectedly, Christian discovers a secret that could tear Oliver’s family apart; and when Henry announces the imminent closure of the mill, it sends a quake through the community. As Christian tries to right the wrongs of the past, his actions threaten to shatter the lives of those he left behind years before.

As for the best of the new releases, The Criterion Collection release for Tampopo is the best and the only real choice for Pick of the Week. Meanwhile, the Mean Dreams DVD earns Puck of the Week, for the best Canadian release of the week.

This is usually a terrible time of year to release a limited release. There are some exceptions to this rule, including releasing a foreign-language film that just picked up an Oscar nomination. That’s the case with The Salesman, which is arguably the best release on this week’s list.
