Synopsis
Hip talk-radio host and journalist Mingus and his French photographer girlfriend, Marion, live cozily in a New York apartment with their cat and two young children from previous relationships. But when Marion’s jolly father, her oversexed sister, and her sister’s outrageous boyfriend unceremoniously descend upon them for an overseas visit, it initiates two unforgettable days of family mayhem. With their unabashed openness and sexual frankness, the triumvirate is bereft of boundaries or filters… and no one is left unscathed in its wake. The visitors push every button in the couple’s relationship, truly putting it to the test. How will the couple fare… when the French come to New York?

New releases this week are dominated by one title, Brave. The second best selling title according to Amazon.com is Lawrence of Arabia, which is a film that should be in everyone's collection, but as a catalog title, it likely won't sell a huge number of units. The third best selling title according to Amazon.com is Duck Dynasty: Season One. That's not a good sign. Fortunately, Brave is clearly Pick of the Week material with the Blu-ray Combo Pack or 3D Combo Pack battling for that honor.

2 Days in New York led the way on the per theater chart with an average of $11,971 in two theaters. This is well below its predecessor and it likely won't have the same legs either. The re-release of Max and the Junkman earned $11,264 in its lone theater. The overall number one film, The Bourne Legacy, cracked the $10,000 club with an average of $10,185. Red Hook Summer was right behind with an average of $10,018 in four theaters.

After another lengthy run for the country's number one film, we will have a new top movie this weekend thanks to a strong debut for The Bourne Legacy, which will beat The Dark Knight Rises after Batman spent three weekends atop the chart. Universal is predicting that their franchise reboot will pick up about $40.3 million this weekend, somewhat behind The Bourne Legacy's $69.2 million debut, but very creditable for movie that takes the franchise in a new direction. Even better for the overall market, The Campaign is predicted to post $27.4 million for Warner Bros., which will be enough for second place.

It is a pretty busy week for limited releases, but not a good week. There are several films earning good reviews, but only one of them is earning great reviews. That film is The Green Wave, but its box office chances are limited, because political documentaries rarely find large audiences, especially when the subject matter isn't connected to most audiences here. I'm most interested in Cosmopolis, but while it debuts in Vancouver tonight, Americans will have to wait a week to see it. On the other end of the scale, there are not as many films earning 80% positive films as there are films earning less than 20% positive reviews. On a side note, one of the best-reviewed release this week is Total Recall, which is coming out at the Film Forum tonight.
