Theater counts: Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes debuts in 4,075 locations
May 9, 2024
The Fall Guy began its theatrical run last weekend with a three-day haul of $27.75 million from 4,002 locations. While it didn’t meet most expectations, the lack of major contenders easily earned it a spot as the biggest movie of the week at the domestic box office. The Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt stuntman action-comedy will inevitably drop into second place this week as the latest from the Planet of the Apes franchise arrives in theaters with the release of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
Starting out in 4,075 theaters, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is the fourth installment in the Planet of the Apes reboot franchise and the tenth movie in the overall series. Directed by Wes Ball, the film follows a young ape who undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike. Through nine previous films, the franchise has collected a whopping $2.12 billion from worldwide viewings spanning back to 1968.
Also opening in wide release this week is the parody film, Not Another Church Movie. The comedy is a spoof on a number of Tyler Perry films and stars Jamie Foxx, with veteran Hollywood actor Mickey Rourke, while being headlined by Kevin Daniels as one, “Taylor Pharry”. Not Another Church Movie will make its big screen appearance in 1,108 movie houses.
Rounding out the top five this week is the aforementioned current box office leader in The Fall Guy, adding six locations this week for a total of 4,008 theaters. In the third place spot is the other newcomer from last week in Tarot, retaining its opening week count of 3,104 cinemas to begin its sophomore frame. Also keeping with last week’s count is the re-release of blockbuster, Star Wars Ep. I: The Phantom Menace, still available in 2,700 venues. Lastly, chart topper from two weeks ago, Challengers, can still be seen on the big screen in a respectable 2,609 sites.
Looking ahead to next week we see the launch of three new wide releases, the largest of which will undoubtedly be the John Krasinski directed live-action/animated comedy IF. The film, starring Ryan Reynolds and Cailey Fleming, is expected to arrive in approximately 3,900 locations. Also coming to theaters is the first of two chapters in the American horror series The Strangers, as The Strangers: Chapter 1 is projected to start out in about 2,800 locations. Finally, making its debut in roughly 2,000 cinemas is Back to Black, a biographical drama about singer Amy Winehouse.
