Theater counts: Civil War to become widest release
April 18, 2024
The dystopian action-thriller Civil War will almost certainly become the widest release in theaters this weekend. We don’t have an official theater count from A24, but after its strong opening last weekend, it’s safe to assume it’ll be playing in about the same number of theaters as last time, maybe slightly more. Abigail is the widest new release, and is joined by The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and Spy x Family Code: White as new options for theatergoers.
Civil War easily topped the chart last weekend, and has continued making good progress during the week. It has earned about $32 million so far, by our estimates (A24 does not release weekday box office numbers until the end of the week). It will be going head-to-head again with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire this weekend, and the monster movie will by the second-widest release, playing in 3,658 theaters this weekend.
Horror comedy Abigail will debut in 3,384 locations. With an ensemble cast led by Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton and Melissa Barrera going up against young Alisha Weir, who plays Abigail, this is a movie looking to hit audiences with some dark and gory humor.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare will open in 2,845 movie houses, an indication that the tongue-in-check action thriller from Guy Ritchie is aimed at a slightly more niche audience than more typical action fare. It could still be mixing it up at the top of the chart come Sunday—we’ll have more on that tomorrow.
From Crunchyroll, Spy x Family Code: White is also debuting wide, hitting 2,009 theaters. That’s quite wide for an anime title, which usually start out in about 1,500 locations.
Also of note this weekend: Bob Marley: One Love expands back into 1,104 movie houses. That possibly has something to do with Saturday being April 20. Sasquatch Sunset expands into 856 theaters for Bleecker Street. Purdie Distribution will launch action comedy Villains Inc. in 290 theaters.
