Theater counts: no slowing down for F9

With the release of F9: The Fast Saga last weekend as well as this week’s The Boss Baby: Family Business and The Forever Purge, Universal Pictures is currently keeping very busy. F9 debuted last weekend in 4,179 locations and earned just over $70 million during its first three days. The latest figures show the action film has earned $88 million domestically and $424 million worldwide, and it’ll be expanding to 4,203 locations to start off its second weekend.
The Boss Baby: Family Business, the sequel to the 2017 film The Boss Baby debuts in 3,640 theaters. The Forever Purge, with its ensemble cast, including Josh Lucas and Will Patton, arrives in 3,051 locations. The last film in the Purge series, The First Purge, took in $17.4 million from 3,031 locations in its weekend opener back in the summer of 2018. The studio still has Spirit Untamed and Nobody in theaters, the former playing in 1,288 theaters as it enters its fifth weekend at the box office. Also in wide release this week is the Searchlight Pictures’ music documentary, Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised). The film about the 1969 Harlem Music Festival opens in 752 theaters. Zola, a new film from A24, opened on Wednesday in 1,468 locations and will keep those counts into next week.
Looking ahead to next week, the long awaited Black Widow hits theaters. The 24th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the first film in Phase Four, the $200 million+ superhero film starring Scarlett Johansson as “Black Widow” is estimated to debut in 4,000 theaters per early reports from Walt Disney Pictures…
