Weekend Wrap-Up: Disney has a Beautiful Weekend at the Box Office
July 21, 2020
Disney again topped the charts over the weekend, as Beauty and the Beast earned $467,000 in 527 theaters according to Deadline. The second place film was another Disney re-release, Iron Man with $430,000 in 462 theaters. Meanwhile, Bohemian Rhapsody was released by Fox, which it is now owned by Disney, and it earned third place with $240,000 in 376 theaters. All three films were in the first weekend of their re-release. That seems to be Disney’s strategy: release a movie for a single weekend, grab a spot in the top five, and use that as free publicity to promote the films, all of which are either on Disney Plus or Hulu. On the other hand, the next two films, Jurassic Park ($210,000 in 246 theaters) and The Goonies ($202,000 in 138), have been in re-release for weeks.
Relic was the best new release we had official numbers for this past weekend, earning $164,000 in 133 theaters for a total of $812,000 after three weeks of release. This puts it on pace to hit $1 million, likely by the end of the month. On the other hand, there’s not a lot of room for competition, so it would only take one similarly-sized release to come out before then to keep it from that milestone.
