Weekend Wrap-Up: Busting Makes the Box Office Feel Good
July 7, 2020
Last week, Disney dominated the chart with re-releases. This week, it was Sony’s turn. This past weekend, Deadline has Ghostbusters earning first place with a reported weekend haul of $550,000 in 622 theaters giving it a five-day box office of $656,000. This could be a good omen for Afterlife, which may or may not come out in March. Sony also had the second place film, Jumanji: The Next Level, which added $300,000 in 220 theaters over the weekend for a total of $317.3 million so far.
The best new release of the weekend was Relic, which opened in third place with $192,352 in 69 theaters. Unfortunately, few people watched The Truth, as it only managed $2,200 in ten theaters. A French drama, even one this good, doesn’t seem to be a good fit for current times.
