International Box Office: Ford v Ferrari has a Closer Race Internationally

Ford v Ferrari opened in top spot on the international chart, just like it did domestically. However, it wasn’t nearly as dominant earning $21.4 million in 41 markets. The film wasn’t nearly as strong internationally as it was domestically in most markets, but it did do really well in Russia with an opening of $3.33 million on 1,044 screens, easily earning first place in that market. It’s wasn’t as successful in either the U.K. or France, earning $2.3 million each. On the other hand, the film wasn’t even able to crack $1 million in Spain. This is surprising, as the box office results of sports movies tend to be proportional to their popularity and this kind of auto racing is more popular internationally than it is domestically.
Charlie’s Angels earned second place with $19.43 million on 25,276 screens in 41 markets. The film’s biggest market was China, where it earned second place with $9.54 million on 18,500 screens. Its best market was Indonesia, where it earned first place with $2.88 million on 1,122. It did well in both Australia with $1.28 million on 285 screens and in Russia with $1.13 million on 1,409. Or to be more precise, it did well, when compared to its debut here. The film clearly has a stronger international draw than its domestic draw, but it will need to continue to overperform and have long legs if it wants to break even any time soon.
Joker climbed to third place with $13.7 million on 6,997 screens in 79 markets for totals of $696.0 million internationally and $1.018 billion worldwide. It became the first R-rated film to ever reach that milestone and is the biggest DC Comics movie in 43 international markets and the biggest Warner Bros. movie in 25. It should have the legs to add to those totals, but it might drop out of the top five before then. We will continue to track it for at least a couple of more weeks.
Somewhere Winter opened in fourth place with $13.43 million in three markets, of which $13.33 million was earned during its first place debut in its native China.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil rounded out the top five, again, this time with $11.8 million in 53 markets over the weekend for totals of $352.9 million internationally and $458.9 million worldwide. The might be enough to break even sometime during its home market run, but if the film can earn closer to $500 million, it will break even a lot sooner.
