Weekend Estimates: Hustlers and It Both Surprise Over Weekend

It is shaping up to be a great weekend at the box office with both Hustlers and It: Chapter Two topping expectations. It: Chapter Two is going to repeat on top, with an estimated sophomore stint of $40.74 million for a running tally of $153.80 million. This represents a 55% decline, which is certainly fantastic for a horror sequel. It still likely means $250 million domestically is out of the question, but even $200 million is amazing for a movie that cost less than $70 million to make. Internationally, the film pulled in another $47 million in 78 markets for a two-week total of $169.5 million. It has already made over $300 million worldwide, which might be enough to break even, depending on its advertising budget and exact share of the box office. If not, it will break even very shortly.
Hustlers is also topping expectations with an estimated opening of $33.23 million this weekend. This is the best opening in the history of the studio, STX Entertainment, as well as for the two leads. Additionally, the film’s reviews and its target audience suggest long legs, although I am concerned about its B minus from CinemaScore. It is a black comedy, so a B minus isn’t fatal for this genre, but it will hurt its legs nonetheless. Internationally, the film is getting a slow roll out earning $4.46 million million in 15 markets during its opening weekend. This includes $1.7 million in the U.K. and $1.2 million in Russia. These are decent openings for this time of year, but nothing special. R-rated comedies rarely translate well into other cultures / languages, so these results are on par with expectations.
Angel Has Fallen is snagging third place according to estimates with $4.4 million, which would give it $60.4 million after four weeks of release. It might not stay in third place when the weekend final numbers are released.
Good Boys is right behind with $4.26 million over the weekend for a total of $73.3 million after a month of release. The film isn’t doing much internationally, it only has $18.3 million so far, but it is doing well enough that the film will break even during its initial push into the home market.
The Lion King was a surprise entrant in the top five with $3.56 million over the weekend for a total of $533.99 million after two full months of release.
Every single film in the top five beat expectations. However, it wasn’t all good news as The Goldfinch is bombing with an estimated opening weekend of $2.64 million. Add in its reviews, its B plus from CinemaScore, and its theater average and the film will likely have very short legs.
None of the limited releases we have numbers for really stood out. Monos is performing the best with an average of $8,657 in five theaters.
