Weekend Estimates: Angel Doesn’t Fall, Overcome Can’t, Ready Was Ready
August 25, 2019
There is some good news to talk about and that’s been depressingly rare this year. Angel Has Fallen is beating expectations with an estimated opening of $21.25 million. This opening is just behind London Has Fallen’s debut. Additionally, Angel has better reviews and matched the previous film’s A minus from CinemaScore, so it should have similar legs. It is too soon to tell how it will do internationally, but given the franchise’s performance so far, I remain optimistic.
Good Boys is holding on better than expected down just 45% to $11.75 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $42.06 million. The film should have no trouble getting to $65 million domestically and maybe a little beyond. This is a fantastic run for a film that cost only $20 million to make. On the downside, it is really struggling internationally. For example, it doesn’t appear to be able to crack $1 million in any market this weekend, although it is coming close in Germany with an estimated opening of $997,000. That said, it was expected to struggle, so this is nothing to panic over.
Overcomer is missing expectations with an opening weekend of just $8.2 million according to estimates. Additionally, its reviews are as weak as most faith-based films earn. On the positive side, it earned an A plus from CinemaScore and the films from the Kendrick Brothers tend to have long legs, so I really doubt this film will disappear from theaters any time soon.
The Lion King is right behind with an estimated $8.15 million giving it a running tally of $510.64 million after six weeks of release. More importantly, the film pulled in $30.0 million internationally for a total of $997.9 million so far. It will reach $1 billion internationally tomorrow, becoming just the eighth film to do so.
Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw is right behind, and I mean right behind with an estimated $8.14 million over the weekend for a total of $147.70 million so far. More importantly, the film is earning an estimated $102 million in China. Granted, films tend to have short legs in China, but this should still be enough to lift the film to over $700 million worldwide.
Ready or Not is just missing the top five with an estimated $7.55 million over the weekend for a total opening of $10.58 million. The film’s reviews are the best of the weekend, while its B plus from CinemaScore is great for a horror / Black Comedy. I don’t think it will last long enough in theaters for its word-of-mouth to truly help, but it should perform even better on the home market.
Brittany Runs a Marathon is the best of the limited releases with an average of just over $35,000 in five theaters. This is enough to justify significant expansion, but I’m not sure it will be enough to expand semi-wide.
