Friday Estimates: Angel Rises from London
August 24, 2019
Angel Has Fallen earned an estimated $7.9 million on Friday. Amazingly, this is an improvement over the $7.51 million earned by London has Fallen during its opening day. Most people, myself included, assumed this film would suffer a deep decline. This film also earned better reviews, while both films earned an A minus from CinemaScore. On the other hand, the film did earn less during the 24-hour Friday period, so that suggests a slightly smaller opening weekend. Even so, it will beat our prediction with just over $21 million.
Good Boys is holding on surprisingly well, down 59% from its opening Friday to earn $3.44 million. It is on pace for $11 million over the full weekend and it will be a financial success, even if it can’t find an audience internationally.
There was a relatively large gap between our prediction for Overcomer and most people’s predictions. I assumed the film would do about as well as War Room, while most thought there would be a much larger drop-off. It turns out I was overly optimistic, as Overcomer managed $3.03 million on Friday, putting it on pace for about $8.5 million over the weekend. The film did get an A plus from CinemaScore, but this only means it is preaching to the choir and its reviews show it has very little crossover appeal. In other words, it is a typical faith-based film.
Ready or Not actually managed fourth place on Friday with $2.42 million giving it $5.44 million after three days of release. Because the film opened on Wednesday, it should have a better than average internal multiplier over the three-day weekend. Additionally, its reviews and its B plus from CinemaScore are excellent for a horror film. On the other hand, it is still a horror film, so it won’t have fantastic legs. Look for $7 million over the three-day weekend for a total opening of $10 million over five.
The Lion King was next with $2.20 million on Friday. This film and Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw, which was right behind with $2.15 million, should both remain in the top five over the weekend.
