Friday Estimates: Us Ends Captain Marvel’s Run on Top with $29 million
March 23, 2019
Us topped expectations, and even beat Friday’s revisions, with an opening day of $29.06 million on Friday. Universal is projecting an opening weekend of $67 million after this result; however, studios tend to lowball these projections, so there’s a good chance it’ll do even better. That said, it would be wise to treat the movie like a horror sequel when it comes to predicting its legs. Granted, its reviews are more than 90% positive, and it earned a B from CinemaScore. That might seem low, but it is actually quite strong for a horror film.
Captain Marvel matched expectations nearly perfectly with $9.23 million on Friday, putting it on pace for $35 million over the full weekend. The film will crack $300 million today, if it hasn’t already, making it the 13th film in the MCU to do so, while it could get to $400 million domestically. It will take a bounce from Endgame to get there, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it did.
Five Feet Apart also beat expectations with $2.75 million on Friday to put it on pace for $9 million over the weekend. This is an amazing sophomore stint for a film that cost just $7 million to make.
On the other hand, Wonder Park fell almost 60% from its opening Friday down to just $2.17 million, which means that it’s heading for between $8 million and $9 million over the weekend. This is a stunning decline for a family film, especially since there’s no new direct competition. Granted, neither the critics nor audiences loved the film, as it only managed 29% positive reviews and a B-plus from CinemaScore, which is very weak for a family film.
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World rounded out the top five on Friday with $1.67 million, putting it on course for $7 million over the weekend. The film will likely cross $150 million domestically by this time next week.
