Theater Averages: Gate Begins Eternity on Top

At Eternity’s Gate led the weekend chart with an average of $23,214 in four theaters. The overall box office leader, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, was next with an average of $14,932. Green Book debuted with an average of $12,817 in 25 theaters. This would normally be a good start for a limited release, especially one playing in 25 theaters. However, it isn’t good enough to justify a wide expansion on Wednesday.

None of the rest of the new limited releases came even halfway to the $10,000 club. A Cool Fish came the closest with an average of $4,746 in 15 theaters. Shoah Four Sisters struggled with just $2,840 in one theater. Under the Wire missed the Mendoza Line with an average of just $1,136 in two theaters. Meanwhile, The Last Race only managed an average of $812 in three theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

• A Private War made it to $1 million, but its theater average is just $811, so it won’t get much further.
• Suspiria reached $2 million before the weekend, but that’s as far as it will go.
• Boy Erased got to $2 million over the weekend and it was already more than halfway to $3 million by the end of the weekend.
• Can You Ever Forgive Me? reached $4 million before the weekend and $5 million during the weekend. The film will start losing theaters soon, but it isn’t done hitting milestones.
• Colette hit $5 million before the weekend, but that’s as far as it will go.
• Beautiful Boy made it all the way to $6 million, but its theaters average is just $553, so it will likely collapse at this point. Maybe it will get to $7.5 million, but I wouldn’t bet on it.
