Friday Estimates: Beating the Clock
September 22, 2018
The House with a Clock in its Walls is the only new release that opened well on Friday, with $7.82 million during its opening day. Its reviews are in the overall positive level and it earned a B plus from CinemaScore. This is nearly identical to Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and weaker than Goosebumps’ result. If this film has the same legs as Miss Peregrine, then it will earn $25 million during its opening weekend. That would be an amazing start for a film that cost $42 million to make and significantly better than we predicted.
A Simple Favor was in a distant third place with $3.3 million on Friday. However, this is a little better than expected and means it should top $10 million over the weekend. This in turn makes a $50 million domestic run very likely and, if it can come close to that internationally, it will break even very early in its home market run.
The Nun matched expectations with $2.96 million on Friday and will earn just over $9 million over the weekend, putting its running tally just a day away from $100 million.
Sadly, that’s the last of the good news. The Predator fell 76% from its opening Friday to just $2.45 million yesterday. It will earn barely more than $7 million over the weekend and it will start losing theaters next weekend.
Fahrenheit 11/9 only managed $1.06 million on Friday, which is better than Death of a Nation’s opening day, but far below expectations. Its reviews are 80% positive, while it earned an A from CinemaScore, but I fear it is preaching to a shrinking choir.
Life Itself was even weaker at just $760,000 on Friday, putting it on pace for a $2 million opening weekend. Its reviews are terrible and while it did better with CinemaScore, its B plus score isn’t good either.
Assassination Nation pulled in just $420,000 during its opening Friday. It’s a black comedy, or a thriller with heavy black comedy elements, depending on your point of view. Its reviews are good, but not great, while it was too small of an opening to get a CinemaScore rating. Maybe it will find an audience on the home market.
The Sisters Brothers opened with $37,519 in 4 theaters on Friday for an average of $9,380. This is an excellent start in limited release.
