Thursday Night Previews: Mile 22’s $1 million Debut Dwarfed by Crazy Rich Asians
August 17, 2018
Mile 22 opened with $1 million during its midnight previews. This is not that impressive and it means the film will very likely open on the extreme lower end of our predictions, with under $15 million. Terrible reviews won’t help its legs, although I assume the film’s CinemaScore will be relatively better, but I don’t expect it to stick around in theaters for that long.
On the other hand, Crazy Rich Asians did better than expected, down just 25% on Thursday with $3.75 million. It remained ahead of The Meg, which I wasn’t expecting. This does mean it has a better shot at first place over the weekend and it could even top $20 million over the three-day portion of the weekend. Furthermore, with stellar reviews and an A from CinemaScore, as well as no direct competition, it should stick around in theaters for a while.
Alpha did better than expected with $525,000 during its Thursday previews. It now has a shot at fifth place with $10 million. This should be enough for theater owners to keep it around for a few weeks, long enough for its reviews to translate into good word-of-mouth.
