Thursday Night Previews: Ocean’s Splits $4 million Opening
June 8, 2018
Ocean’s 8 opened with $4 million during its previews. By comparison, the most recent gender-bent remake, Ghostbusters, earned $3.4 million during its previews on its way to a $46.02 million opening weekend. The two films also have very similar reviews, so they could have similar legs. However, we have seen a number of films over-perform during previews only to come back down to earth over the weekend, so I’m not willing to change our $40 million prediction, at least not yet.
Likewise, Hereditary had a faster than expected debut with $1.3 million. The reviews are among the best for a wide-release we’ve seen this year. That said, audiences’ reactions are not as positive. This is far from a mainstream horror movie. It should still beat our $8 million prediction with a start like this, but we won’t have a really clear picture until tomorrow.
On the other hand, Hotel Artemis only managed $271,000 during its previews and its reviews have slipped below the overall positive level. That said, we were only expecting $3 million, so at least we won’t be disappointed.
