Friday Estimates: Wrinkle Tops Panther for a Limited Time

A Wrinkle in Time earned first place on Friday with $10.21 million, which was enough for first place over Black Panther by a small margin. Unfortunately, this lead likely won’t last long, as the film’s reviews are only 42% positive and it only managed a B from CinemaScore. This is the best scores among the new releases this weekend, but not good for a family film and will hurt its legs. Look for a $33 million opening weekend.
Black Panther was pushed into second place on Friday with $9.97 million, putting in on pace for first place with close to $40 million. The film should hit $560 million by the end of the weekend and $600 million by the end of next weekend. Had the film made that much in total worldwide, then I think Disney would have been satisfied. We’re way beyond that now.
The Strangers: Prey at Night did well with $4.0 million on Friday, which is almost as much as it cost to make. It will have short legs, in part due to its 35% positive reviews and its C from CinemaScore, but also because horror films tend to have really short legs. It should still top $10 million over the weekend.
Gringo bombed with $977,000 on Friday, putting it on pace for less than $3 million during its opening weekend. Black Comedies, even good black comedies, rarely find an audience in theaters. So it is not surprising one that earned 39% positive reviews and a C plus from CinemaScore would struggle.
The Hurricane Heist managed to open even worse with $950,000. The film is earning the worst reviews of the weekend, but its CinemaScore was a B minus, behind only A Wrinkle in Time. It will finish in a virtual tie with Gringo at just under $3 million.
