Limited and VOD Releases: Oscars Scare Away Big Limited Releases

March 2, 2018

Mohawk

Oscar night is on Sunday, so moviegoers who are most interested in limited releases are distracted. This explains why there are no big titles that are expected to do well at the box office. There are some films worth checking out, like Foxtrot and Mohawk, but most on this list will do better on Video on Demand than they will in theaters.

Dance Academy: The Comeback - Reviews
Video on Demand
This film has 100% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. On the other hand, the average score handed out by the critics is just 6.5 out of 10, so while all of the critics liked it, none of them really loved it. That said, it’s perfect for a $6 VOD rental.

Did You Wonder Who Fired The Gun? - Reviews
A documentary in which the director, Travis Wilkerson, looks at the story of his grandfather, who murdered a black man in the 1940s and got away with it. Documentaries rarely have box office success, even the ones that earn reviews as good as this film is.

Foxtrot - Reviews
A married couple’s life is thrown into disarray when they are notified by the military that their son died in an accident. The reviews are among the best on this week’s list, but it is a foreign-language film, so that will likely keep it in the art house circuit and out of most mainstream theaters.

Hondros - Reviews
A biography of photojournalist / war corespondent Chris Hondros, who was killed in Libya in 2011. There are only six reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but all of them are positive.

Midnighters - Reviews
Video on Demand
New Year ends in horror, when a couple hit a man in a hit and run and cover it up. The reviews are overwhelmingly positive, but not enthusiastically positive, while it is also playing on VOD, so its box office chances are negligible.

Mohawk - Reviews
Video on Demand
Set during the War of 1812, a native woman goes on the run after her tribe burns down an American camp. The reviews are excellent, but it is also playing on VOD, so its box office chances are terrible.

Oh Lucy! - Reviews
We talked about this a couple of weeks ago, but the release date was pushed back at the last second. Good news, there are now 15 reviews and all of them are positive. However, they are not enthusiastically positive.

Souvenir - Reviews
Isabelle Huppert plays a factory worker, who meets a younger co-worker, who recognizes her from her days as a singer many years ago. The reviews are only mixed, so it will likely disappear from theaters rather quickly.

Submission - Reviews
Stanley Tucci stars as a former writer turned college professor, who is unfulfilled in both his marriage and his job. That changes when he meets a new student and gets invigorated by her talent. And then he gets invigorated by her other things. The reviews are good, but probably not good enough to thrive in limited release. Perhaps it will do well on the home market.

Secondary VOD Releases:
Don’t Talk to Irene - Reviews - Video on Demand
The Vanishing of Sidney Hall - Reviews - Video on Demand
The reviews for Don’t Talk to Irene are good, but not great, but that’s fine for a VOD release.
