Theater Averages: Three Billboards Earns 1st for the Weekend and 3rd for the Year with $80,542

This week’s winner on the theater average chart was Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, opening with an average of $80,542 in four theaters. This puts it in third place for the year, behind Lady Bird ($91,109) and The Big Sick ($84,315). Speaking of Lady Bird, the film earned an average $32,426 in 37 theaters, putting it in the top ten over the weekend. Bill Nye Science Guy is traveling the country and this week it was playing in one theater in Los Angeles earning $14,350. Thor: Ragnarok was right behind with an average of $13,990. The final film in the $10,000 club was Thelma, which earned $10,841 in one theater.

There were only two other new limited releases, and neither of them did well. Intent to Destroy earned an average of $2,900 in three theaters, while No Greater Love was well below the Mendoza Line with an average of just $936 in 23 theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Lady Bird topped $1 million over the weekend and that is far from the last milestone this film will hit.
  • The Killing of a Sacred Deer reached $1 million before the weekend and it was more than halfway to $2 million by the end of the weekend. However, its theater average was below $2,000, so it will likely start losing theaters.
  • LBJ got to $2 million over the weekend, barely, while its theater average is so low it could lose most of its theaters on Friday.
  • The Florida Project topped $3 million early last week and was nearly at $4 million by the end of the weekend.
  • Let There Be Light made it all the way to $5 million early in the weekend.
  • Victoria and Abdul got to $20 million early last week. Unless it earns some serious Awards Season success, this is as far as it will go. That said, $20 million is a great run for a limited release and more than a few wide releases managed on the yearly chart.
