International Box Office: War Comes to China and earns $61.07 million
September 21, 2017
War for the Planet of the Apes returned to the top of the chart earning $62.9 million in 21 markets for totals of $287.9 million internationally and $433.8 worldwide. The film debuted in first place in China with $59.66 million over the weekend for a total opening of $61.07 million.
It remained in second place with $60.3 million on 15,339 screens in 56 markets for totals of $152.6 million internationally and already $371.4 million worldwide. The film debuted in first place in Mexico with $10.37 million on 4,300 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $13.81 million. That’s about the same as its opening here, given the relative size of the two markets. The film’s biggest market is the U.K., where it has pulled in $28.74 million, including $8.24 million in 608 theaters this past weekend. The film has yet to open in a number of major markets, including France, Germany, Italy, and Japan. By the time it’s done, it will have earned about $600 million worldwide.
Spider-Man: Homecoming fell from first to third with $15.24 million on 11,081 screens in 84 markets for totals of $531.33 million internationally and $861.58 million worldwide. The film fell 78% in China to just $14.96 million on 10,100 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $104.49 million. I was expecting the film to fall significantly, but not this much. It’s chances of $900 million took a serious hit as a result.
Up next were two American movies, that is to say, two movies with “American” in their title. American Made earned fourth place with $12.2 million on 5,250 screens in 53 markets for a total of $49.12 million internationally. The film debuted in third place in South Korea with $1.58 million on 691 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.90 million. It earned first place in France with $1.8 million on 352 screens.
American Assassin opened in fifth place, maybe, with $6.19 million in 41 markets. The film’s biggest market was the U.K., where it made $1.04 million in 433 theaters. Meanwhile, its best market was Australia, where it earned $979,534 on 232 screens. Neither result is as good as its opening here.
Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale earned third place in China with $6.14 million over the weekend for a total opening of $6.18 million. This is close enough to fifth place that it is a virtual tie with American Assassin. The film also made 3.35 billion Japanese Yen or $29.80 million during its run in Japan. This is not surprising, as the Sword Art Online is one of the biggest Anime franchises around. I haven’t seen it, but nearly everyone I talk to who has seen it hates it.
Finally, we are continuing to track Despicable Me 3, which added $4.4 million on 3,701 screens in 49 territories to its box office haul, which now sits at $754.33 million internationally and $1.015 billion worldwide. It is now in 30th place on the all-time worldwide chart and should climb a few places before its run is over.
