International Box Office: Logan Scored Nearly $250 million Worldwide in Opening Weekend
March 8, 2017
Logan dominated the international box office chart with $152.7 million in 81 markets for a worldwide opening of $240.9 million. This is almost twice as much as the film cost to make, so it has nearly paid for its entire production budget during the film’s opening weekend. Assuming it has any legs, it will break even before it reaches the home market. China was the biggest single market, as it earned $45.60 million over the weekend for a total opening of $46.38 million, including Thursday previews. The U.K. was well back with an opening of $11.48 million in 602 theaters. Up next is Brazil, which earned $8.2 million, while the film had a total opening of $8.16 million on 954 screens in South Korea, while it earned $8.02 million on 1,200 screens in Russia. The film doesn’t open in Japan until June and it could have over $500 million worldwide by then.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter added another $18.4 million to its box office totals, which now sit at $267.3 million internationally and $294.0 million worldwide. The film plummeted more than 80% in China, but still managed $15.86 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $138.22 million. This is almost enough to pay for its entire production budget in that one market alone. There’s almost no way this film hasn’t broken even based entirely on its international numbers, which is great news for the studio, because it bombed here.
A Dog’s Purpose entered the international chart for the first time earning third place with $17.4 million in 40 markets for totals of $41.3 million internationally and $101.5 million worldwide. Of this, $16.16 million was earned during its debut in China. The film has done well enough to break even sometime during its initial push onto the home market.
Sing returned to the international chart in fourth place with $11.4 million on 9,624 screens in 62 markets for totals of $298.18 million internationally and $566.36 million worldwide. The film’s biggest opening was in Russia, where it earned second place with $6.13 million on 1,430 screens.
La La Land rounded out the top five with $11.1 million in 77 markets for totals of $250.7 million internationally and $396.4 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings this past weekend and returned to the top five due to strong holdovers.
