Weekend Estimates: Logan’s $85.3 Million is Fourth-Biggest Weekend in March

Logan is turning out to be everything Fox hoped for this weekend, with excellent reviews and a massive $85.3 million opening to kick off the Spring box office season. The film’s debut is a notable $20 million ahead of X-Men: Apocalypse’s $65.8 million last Summer. The only way to make it look anything less than stellar is to match it up against giants like Deadpool (which opened with $132 million in February last year), and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which holds the March weekend record of $166 million.
All-in-all Logan is, in particular, a welcome hit for 20th Century Fox, which has built something of a track record for getting films to between $100 million and $200 million at the box office, but has found it increasingly difficult to break out beyond that. Hidden Figures has been a great performer during Awards Season, of course, and its total of $158 million is a great example of what Fox can do with a really well-made drama. X-Men: Apocalypse, Trolls, Kung Fu Panda 3, and Independence Day: Resurgence all ended up between $100 million and $200 million domestically as well, though, and that’s not enough to move the dial much for a modern studio. With $85.3 million in the bank already, and reviews that keep it at the 90%+ level on Rotten Tomatoes, Logan will sail past $200 million, and could briefly hold the title of top grossing movie in 2017, before Beauty and the Beast shows up and spoils that particular party. (Incidentally, I wonder how many people would have guessed that Hidden Figures has earned more than any other film at the domestic box office so far this year?)
In second place on this week’s chart, Get Out will fall only 22% from its excellent opening weekend. Strong word-of-mouth is propelling the film to surprising box office heights, and it’ll end the weekend on $75 million.
In third, The Shack is offering some welcome counter-programming for the faith-based crowd, and its $16.1-million debut is more than respectable. It could have a decent run, although it most likely won’t last in theaters until Easter, which falls on April 16 this year.
The third wide release of the week, Before I Fall is faring less well. It will pick up about $4.9 million for the weekend, per Open Road, and land in fifth place for the weekend. Table 19, which Fox Searchlight launched in 868 theaters, will likewise land with a bit of a thud. It’s projected to earn $1.575 million this weekend, for a theater average just under $2,000.
With awards season over, this isn’t a great time of year for limited releases, but Tim Timmerman: Hope of America is doing solid business for Purdie Distribution, with $62,488 expected from 12 theaters. Kedi continues to expand strongly, with Oscilloscope expecting $234,700 from 54 theaters.
