Friday Estimates: Logan Leaps to the Top with $33 million
March 4, 2017
Logan started off with $33 million on Friday. This is a little lower than predictions / previews suggested, but is still the fourth-biggest opening day in March. The film’s reviews are 94% positive, and it earned an A minus from CinemaScore, so it could bounce back over the weekend, but at this moment, an $80 million opening weekend is more likely than $85 million. This would still be the fourth-best opening weekend in March, but it will be very close and any further weakness will give Oz The Great and Powerful the edge on that chart.
Get Out held on a lot better than expected, earning $8 million on Friday. This is a mere 26% drop-off from its opening Friday and puts it on pace for a $25 million sophomore stint. At this pace, the film will reach $100 million domestically by the end of next weekend. That will be enough to pay for its entire production budget and likely its entire global advertising budget. Even if it fails to find an audience internationally, it will be a financial success.
The Shack opened better than expected with $5.45 million on Friday. Its reviews remain terrible, but it earned an A from CinemaScore, which means it is connecting with its target audience, and likely no-one else. Faith-based films tend to have a bounce on Sunday, so it should earn between $15 million to $16 million over the weekend. This is a fantastic start and puts it on pace for over $50 million in total.
On the other hand, Before I Fall is bombing. That film only managed $1.67 million on Friday, meaning it will earn less than $4.5 million during the weekend, putting it below the $2,000 “Mendoza Line” during its opening weekend. Its reviews are 68% positive, but it only managed a B from CinemaScore. It likely didn’t cost a lot to make, so maybe it will become a hit on VOD.
