International Box Office: Grey Enters the Black with $276.2 million Worldwide
February 23, 2017
Fifty Shades Darker remained in first place on the international chart with $44.5 million on 9,600 screens in 59 markets for totals of $187.2 million internationally and $276.2 million worldwide. The film had no major openings this past weekend, and won’t until it opens in Japan in June. The film’s best market over the weekend was Germany, where it earned $6.1 million on 736 screens for a total of $21.2 million after two weeks of release.
La La Land leaped into second place with $31.7 million in 73 markets over the weekend for totals of $206.1 million internationally and $339.7 million worldwide. The film opened in China earning $8.53 million over the weekend and $24.45 million from its Valentine’s Day debut through Sunday. With Oscars being handed out this Sunday, it should get a boost at the box office, even if it doesn’t quite live up to bullish expectations.
xXx: Return of Xander Cage slipped a spot to third with $27.6 million in 58 markets for totals of $263.8 million internationally and $308.1 million worldwide. The film continues to lead China with a weekend haul of $26.56 million and a two-week total of $133.85 million. At this point, the film may have made enough internationally to pay for its entire production budget with its debut in its final major market, Japan, this weekend. There is a chance there will be another installment in the franchise, but the studio won’t even bother with a wide release here.
The Lego Batman Movie was next with $21.5 million in 62 markets for a two-week total of $72.0 million internationally and $169.2 million. The film has almost paid for its entire production budget in just two weeks. It is becoming a major hit in the U.K. with $21.68 million, including $5.51 million this past weekend. That’s better than its run here, given the relative size of the two markets.
The Great Wall returned to the international chart in fifth place with $19.8 million in 46 markets for totals of $242.7 million internationally and $261.2 million worldwide. The film’s biggest opening was in Russia, where it made $4.18 million on 1,228 screens, which was more than double the second place film in that market.
