2016 - Awards Season: DGA - Winners

February 5, 2017

Lion

The last of the Directors Guild of America awards were handed out over the weekend in what was likely a warm venue. On the other hand, I’m dealing with a snow storm that hasn’t really stopped in three days and power outages. Joy. Fortunately, there’s not much to talk about. All three theatrical categories went as expected with La La Land winning yet again.

The categories and winners are...

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary

  • Ezra Edelman for O.J.: Made in America
First-Time Feature Film Director

Notes and Reactions...

  • La La Land continues to dominate Awards Season, so it appears there has been no backlash from its record-tying 14 Oscar nominations.
  • Garth Davis earned nominations for Best Picture and Best First Picture, so it is no surprise Lion won for the latter.
  • I really wanted Otto Bell to win Best Documentary for The Eagle Huntress, but O.J.: Made in America was the favorite. However, I still think they are gaming the system here and that shouldn’t be rewarded.
