Per Theater Chart: Amy Earns an A

Only one film was in the $10,000 club this week. Amy earned an average of $37,083 in six theaters. That's amazing for a documentary, but this genre rarely expands truly wide. Let's see what happens next weekend and maybe I will be proven wrong.

Many of the other new limited releases did well, even if none of them came close to $10,000. Cartel Land was the best of the rest earning an average of $7,791 in two theaters. This is great for a documentary, but it likely won't expand significantly, due to its genre. Jimmy's Hall was next with an average of $6,627 in three theaters. This is enough to suspect it will open in more theaters, but it likely won't expand significantly. A Poem Is a Naked Person earned $5,526 in one theater. The final new release of the week we have box office numbers for was Faith of Our Fathers, which missed the Mendoza Line ($2,000) with an average of just $1,274 in 344 theaters. Faith-based films are a real wildcard at the box office.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple of Per Theater Chart alumni:

• Me and Earl and the Dying Girl did better than expecting hitting $3 million early in the weekend and is already over $4 million, if you include Monday's numbers. It will get to $5 million, probably on Friday.
• Love and Mercy managed to get all of the way to $10 million, which is more than some wide releases have earned this year. Unfortunately, it is losing theaters, so getting to $15 million is likely out of reach.
