Limited Releases: Good and Slow
May 15, 2015
This week's list of limited releases is shorter than usual, as I needed to get the home market numbers done. On the other hand, there are only six or so films earning great reviews and / or any amount of buzz, so there's not much you are missing. Good Kill could be the biggest hit, at least for a week before it goes to Video on Demand. Others, like Slow West, are already playing on Video on Demand.

A movie about addiction and homelessness. Jude and Bobbie are a couple living with addiction and stealing just enough to get by, but when one of them ends up in the hospital, they have to confront their lives. The reviews are excellent, but there's not a lot of star power here. Animals opens tonight in a dozen theaters. Check out the official site for more details.
This film is based on an award-winning novel. It has an amazing cast and a director and screenwriter who have made some great documentaries. However, something clearly went wrong, as its Tomatometer Score is just 27% positive. That's low enough that even renting it on Video on Demand is probably too much.
Ethan Hawke plays a (former) air force pilot who now operates drones. He becomes disillusioned with his job, especially when he begins to question the morality of drone strikes. The reviews started out great, but have slipped to merely very good. Good Kill opens in theaters tonight and Video on Demand next Friday, so it doesn't have a whole lot of time to become a hit in theaters.
Carol plays a widow whose dog dies and, as a result, she loses the spark that kept her life going. Her friends help her rediscover that spark. This film has a cast most limited releases could only dream of. It also has the reviews to match its cast. I'll See You in My Dreams opens tonight in New York City and Los Angles before expanding in the coming weeks. Check out the official site for more details.
Did you like Argo? Then you will want to watch this documentary to see what actually happened. Our Man in Tehran opens tonight at the Cinema Village in New York City with other dates scheduled throughout summer. Check out the official site for more details.
This western has an amazing cast and the reviews are 90% positive. Furthermore, it is being released by A24, which just had they biggest hit in their short history. It is also playing on Video on Demand, so don't expect this film to match A24's other hits. Slow West opens tonight in two theaters, one in Los Angeles and the other in New York City, with planned expansions in the coming weeks. Check out the official site for more details.
A group of friends find a camera in their neighbor's apartment, a camera that takes pictures from 24 hours in the future. They use it, but after reading their neighbor's notes, they learn if the events in the photo don't happen, they will create a paradox and will erase themselves from history. The reviews are great, but the film is playing on Video on Demand, which will hurt its box office chances. (It isn't playing on Video on Demand on Amazon, but you can preorder it.)
