Proving There’s No Such Thing as Bad Publicity
April 19, 2003
Despite dire warnings that Hollywood celebrities who spoke out against the war will have their careers suffer, the opposite appears to have happened. Micheal Moore’s speech at the Oscars received boos, and more than a few cheers, is one of those celebrities at the center of this storm. However, instead of being shunned, his documentary, Bowling for Columbine, has seen a bit of a resurgence at the box office. And so has sales of his book, Stupid White Men, which has jumped back to #1 on the bestseller list.
Another indicator will be the ratings for tomorrow’s TV movie, Ice Bound, which stars Susan Sarandon. She has also been at the center of the War debate, and if ratings are solid it can be assumed attempts at boycotting these celebrities are not succeeding.
