Baby Scores a Knockout Punch

To call Million Dollar Baby's debut on the home market a knockout is very apt. Perhaps too apt. Not only did the film easily win the week with $12.42 million in combined rentals, every other film in the top five saw serious drop-offs, sending the overall market sharply downwards.

The rest of the top five is exactly the same as last week, just one place lower and a whole lot smaller. Hide & Seek was down 28% to $7.84 million, The Pacifier was down 29% to $6.51 million. Hitch fell 27% to $4.87 million while Hostage held up the best -- down 26% to $4.15 million.

Only two other new release charted this week with A Very Long Engagement coming in with $870,000 and State Property 2 finishing in 27th with $740,000.

The total rental market for the week was $143.7 million, down 7.65% from last week and 12.8% from last year. That pushed the year-to-date to $4.3 billion, which is 2.7% lower than the same time period from last year.

The top five in sales were the same exact movies that were in the top five in rentals, and were even in the same order: Million Dollar Baby, Hide & Seek, The Pacifier, Hitch, and Hostage.

The only other new movie to chart was A Very Long Engagement, placing ninth, just ahead of Napoleon Dynamite, which has been on the charts for 27 weeks now.

Looking at the TV on DVD charts, The Chappelle Show Season 2 is still in first place, for the eighth time in nine weeks. The first of two new releases in the top five came in second as Tales from the Crypt - The First Season opened well. Seinfeld - The Complete Fourth Season rose to third place on the charts while The Nanny - The Complete First Season came in fourth. Rounding out the top five was Fantastic Four - The Complete Animated Series.
