Flip-Flop at the Top

Like last week, this week's international box office race was very close, but unlike last week, The Incredibles were able to reclaim the crown over Ocean's Twelve. The holidays helped the box office climb in several markets and overall the film earned $23.2 million on 6800 screens in 49 markets and now sits a week away from $300 million with $286.8 million international box office.

Two openings in smaller markets and strong holiday holdovers helped Ocean's Twelve cross the $100 million mark bringing in $20.9 million on 4900 screen in 49 markets and now sits at $107.3 million international and $203 million worldwide. Like all Hollywood films, this one has been buoyed by the lower American dollar. For instance, the easily finished first in South Africa with $525,000, which was just 5% up on the original film in local currency, more than double in American dollars.

The first full week for National Treasure in the U.K. proved profitable has the film took in $2 million on 409 theatres. While that was only good enough for third place, but its per theatre was the best in the top ten. Overall the film took in $16.6 million on 3500 screens in a couple dozen markets for a $79.7 million running tally.

Kung Fu Hustle failed to finish first in Japan, the only market so far where the film has not taken top spot. However, with $3.2 million it is still one of the all-time best non-Hollywood / non-Japanese openings there. The film maintained its first place standing in its five other markets adding $10.2 million to its $35.1 million international box office.

Rounding out the top five for the third weekend in a row was Howl's Moving Castle with $9.6 million this weekend in Japan and South Korea. So far the film has made $134.9 million and should break $200 million in Japan alone.
