DVD Sales - Potter Is Magic on the Home Market
December 24, 2007
New releases earned the top three spots on the sales chart this week, including Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which sold 5.26 million units for a total of $108.48 million in opening week revenue.
Second place went to The Bourne Ultimatum with 3.40 million units sold for $53.13 million, while High School Musical 2 continued the phenomenon, selling 2.26 million units for an opening week mark of $35.19 million.
The first of the holdovers was Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End, which added 2.08 million units to take its impressive two-week tally to 9.43 million, while it has already brought in $192.85 million in revenue.
Superbad just missed the million mark selling 999,000 units for 3.45 million after two weeks and $69.28 million in revenue.
A little note on Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End and its sales so far.
While the DVD is a week away from becoming the biggest selling DVD of the year, it is behind Dead Man's Chest's pace. After two weeks, that film had sold 11.82 million units and currently sits at 16.17 million units sold in just over a year of release.
There were two other new releases to chart this week, starting with The Jason Bourne Collection in eighth place with 494,000 units sold for $18.35 million.
Finally, Lost - Season 3 placed tenth with 473,000 units sold, but earned more than the above release with $18.45 million in total revenue.
Since The Bourne Ultimatum was the only marquee exclusive release this week, many thought HD-DVD would finally win its first week this year.
However, it was not to be, as Blu-Ray won with ease 61% to 39%.
Blu-Ray appears to be headed for a clean sweep of the year, which will make it very hard for HD-DVD to convince Warner Bros., the only major studio that is still neutral, to jump to HD-DVD, or to even remain neutral after CES 2008 in mid-January.
