International Top Five - Ratatouille's a Five Star International Release
November 7, 2007
For the fifth week in a row, Ratatouille led the way on the international charts as it pulled in $15.65 million on 3732 screens in 30 markets for a total of $375.08 million. The film is still number one in the U.K. with $3.22 million on 498 screens and in Italy with $3.15 million on 536 screens. However, its best market of the weekend was Germany where it added $3.84 million on 835 screens scoring second place in the process. The film now has $42.19 million in Germany, $40.89 million in the U.K., and $20.37 million in Italy, which is impressive but well back of France where the animated feature has earned $66.05 million after three months of release. Even with no further markets to open in, Ratatouille will have no problem becoming just the third Pixar film to earn $600 million worldwide and the sixth such hit this year.
Resident Evil: Extinction saw massive expansion this weekend nearly tripling last weekend's haul with $10.80 million on 2256 screens in 39 markets for a total of $68.90 million. Almost half of that came from Japan where the film placed first with $5.20 million on 325 screens. Meanwhile, a sizeable chunk of the rest came from Spain where it earned second place and $1.92 million on 351 screens over the weekend and $3.40 million in total. This is a little lower than expected, but a local hit is dominating the marketplace and proved to be too much competition this weekend.
No new openings didn't hurt Stardust as it remained in third place with $8.47 million on 2626 screens in 46 markets for a total of $74.82 million internationally, and $113.19 million worldwide. This is not great box office numbers compared to its $70 million production budget, but fantastic compared to its domestic total. Its best market of the weekend was the U.K. where it added $2.95 million on 448 screens for a total of $19.77 million after three weeks. Meanwhile it grew by 2% in France earning $1.13 million on 337 screens over the weekend for a total of $2.75 million after two. The film's midweek number are fantastic, which is a real boost for the film's chances to reach $100 million internationally. I'm still not sure that it will, but the odds are improving.
The Heartbreak Kid debuted in Germany scoring an impressive $3.47 million on 497 screens over the weekend, but that still left it in third place. That's about half the film's weekend haul, while it also performed reasonably well in Mexico scoring second with $1.19 million on 275 screens. Overall the film added $7.88 million on 1509 screens in 19 markets for a total of $30.65 million internationally, and is poised to overtake its domestic total sometime this weekend.
Saw IV added a few more markets this weekend, but still fell 40% to $7.46 million on 1839 screens in 23 markets for an early total of $26.04 million. Granted, these markets were on the smaller side, but it also did poorly in holdovers falling 60% in the U.K. to $2.06 million on 389 screens and 55% in Spain to $1.10 million on 300 screens. So far the film has earned $10.09 million and $4.89 million respectively, which is a mixed result compared to the previous releases. On the other hand, the weaker American dollar should help the film compensate for a weaker domestic showing.
